Not only was the public interest at a high pitch, but the sales organizations of the producing companies of the middle west were m9re largely repre.sen ted than ever before in automotiYe history. Condition of roads in Illinois and nearby states as reported by the Chicago Motor club follow: · ILLINOIS Snowfall has done much toward removing the extremely slippery condition of the highways and travel is somewhat safer. All main roads are now open to traffic but will be icy and slippery in places and some caution is still necessary, Florence, Ill.-The ferry over the Illinois river at this point is operating on day service only, during cold weather. Cairo, Ill.-The ferry charge to Birds Point is $1.50 for car and one passenger and 25 cents for each additional passenger, instead of $1.25 for car and one passenger as previously reported. Ferries leave Cairo at 5 :30 a. m. and every hour thereafter until 10:40 p, m. WISCONSIN That Ford production is to set a new record this year is indicated by an announcement that the Ford motor company is to maintain at Detroit a five d~y week for employees and at the some time to operate the plants six days a week, thereby putting on 30,000 additional men and increasing production 20 per cent before March 1. Employment by Ford is already at the highest peak of history, and with the additions announced will reach 150,000 men. Under the five-day week operation for machines and men the company estitrlates that 100,000 fewer model A cars were produced this year than would have been the case on a sixday basis. The change that will be put in force is equivalent to the employment of another day's supply of men and the gain of another day's production, without disturbing the present policy of giving each man two days of leisure each week. All men will have Sunday off. Pressure of orders and increased economy of operation are the reasons announced for the new plan.
