New Marshall Field Store for .North Shore BIG LOOP STORE TAlES OVER OLD HAVEN SITE WiD Erect Sightly Five-Story Structure at Sherman and Church .May 1 construction i·s exBEFORE pected to begin on a permanent home for Marshall Field and company's Evanston store. The building, an imposing five-story structure of limestone with granite and marble trim, will rise on part of the site of the old Haven school- the northwest corner of Sherman avenue and Church street, just across the street from the Beake building, which will be torn down some years from now to make room for a building to be occupied by Henry C. Lytton and sons. Field's bought the leasehold estate on the site from Dean Ralph E. Heilman of the Northwestern university school of commerce and Howard Elting, who leased it from the school board for 99 years. A sublease on the part of the site now occupied by the Varsity theater was obtained last year by the Ballard Building corporation, but by the terms of the present transaction that sublease is canceled. Field's takes over the entire site, 160x330 feet, and the Varsity theater becomes a tenant of the downtown store. The new building, will occupy only 80 feet on Sherman and 220 on Church. It will contain approximately 100,000 feet of floor space, and has been designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. Plans calls for tall window case- · nients which will give the effect of windows four stories high. There will be nine of them on the Church street side and two on the Sherman avenue front-where the main entrance will be located. This is the five-story building which Marshall Field & Co. i·s planning to build on the site of the old Haven school at Sherman avenue and Church street next to the Varsity theater. Graham, Anderson, Probst and White are the architects. Field's has purchased the leasehold e'state on the whole site, which includes the property occupied by the Varsity, from Deal Ralrh E.
