WILME'TTE LIFE . March 8, 1929 Lighter Tone for Ceiling · Than Walls Is Best Plan In the great out-of-doors we find the sky lighter than tH e shadows under the trees. This is our nat ural everyday background, and if we want to suggest the great and wonderful open atmosphere we must paint the ceiling lighter than the walls and the walls lighter February Figure Is $641,750, Slightly than the floor. For instance, were we Above Last Year to maks the ceiling the clarke t, th~t would unconsciously suggest a catas\Vhile there had be~n some hope trophe, a storm approaching, a s doe s that Evanston would h ave a million the darkened sky. dollar February in buildin g, the actual total fell far below that mark. The record s of th e building department show that permits for $641,750 were issued. ' This total exceeds last February's mark, $613,500, by a small margin, but does not compare with the February 1927 total, which was $1,260,100. The total·3 for February 1926 and 1925 were, respectively, $553,700 and $506,730. ] anuary, 1929, a bad month, the total was only $311,000, less than half of February's mark. BUILDING TOTAL LOW Kitchen Is Rated Very Important Place in the Home How about that kitchen? Is it keeping pace with the advancing times? In th ese day s when the house is be ing improved the kitchen should not b e ove rlooked. There are beautiful cabinets, there ar<' electric refrigerator s and patent di shwashers and the gas stove, once considered as the last word in kitchen equipment, has been improved almost past recognition of its former self. A new era in home cooking is here,. new ideas. new methods and better and easier cooking. New ii1dependence in the preparation of meals, new freedom from the kitchen. All this made possible by the smooth top gas range which is now available to the· homemaker, a range which occupies less floor space than the ordinary range and yet provides four distinct heat zones for top cooking because of the designs of the top and the superburner with which this range is equipped. \Vith this range the old accidents clue to a saucepan tipping on the uneven top are eliminated; the top of this stove is as level and smooth as the top of the dining-room table. The range has the cooking capacity of the coal range, with controlled heat. Keeping the dinner at table temperature without drying out requires practically no attention on this modern stove. No fretting, no worry about foods getting cold or burning, even though late arrivals delay the serving of the meal. Each burner provides four cooking zones, an immense saving in gas, and in addition to this the cooking process on this range brings out all the oldtime flavor which was formerly possible to obtain only on the old-fashioned coal stove. · There's a Great Vogue for Rock Gardens VERYWHERE owners of the better type homes' are turning to rock gardens to add new beautv. charm and interest to their grounds.
