March 22, 1929 WILMETT~ LIFE 45 .Paul Swan Appears Odd F ellow· Lodge Plans at Goodman Theater Entertainment March 28 An entert<;1inment is being prepared in Role of Dancer ·by A. T . Sherman lodge, No. 892, I. 0. North Shore folk who know Paul Swan merely as a sculptor and painter may regard with some amazement his premiere at the Goodman theater Sunday night, March 24, in a new role that of an interperter of the dance' but it is on his ability in this field of art that he prefers to rest hi·s claim to laurels. His program Sunday will include such offerings as "The LeO'end of Narcissus," "The Great G;d Ra " "Volga Boatmen," "Chanson In done'" "Omar Khayyam" and an original fa~ tasy based on the spirit of the "gay and na_ ughty nineties." A·sked why, when he has achieved success in one art realm, he should. aspire to achievements in another, this modern I.eonardo di Vinci will reply that he regards dancing as a relaxation and an escape from the boredome of the at_ elier. It was as a model that, as a penniless boy, who had ridden the bumpers to Chicago from the Kansa s cornfields. that he worked his way through the Art Institute and made possible his studies in Athens, the city of hi s dreams. But it wa·s this experience posing for Sir Gallahad-t hough h~ spent many a night beating rugs- that is responsible perhaps for \\'hat · is said to be tbe nearest aproach to the Adonis ideal than has been achieved bv anv mortal since the days of ancient Greece. Swan, who had written Greek plays and_ produced the~ in his father's barn agamst a door pamted by him self on the bindery canvas, made his debut as a da.ncer aJ the Acropolis in Athens. He. spent a year in Egypt, painting por !raits of the English nobility and studymg posture from the hieroglyphics. Returning to Atnerica, he danced at the fam?t1'3 Tiffany ball, and at the suggestiOn of John Alexander, president of the National Academ y, adopted chore opraphy as a profe ssion. His recent exhibit of paintings and portrait sketches of Chicago debutantes at Roullier's attracted the attention of the local art world. A Chinese playlet, written by himself, and for which he has des igned the 3cenery, will form part of hi s evet!ing's entertainment. 0. ~-· for Thursday evening March 28 ~h1ch is des'i gnated Grand Masters~· mght.
