· Sports and Other Wilmette Recreation Board News WILMETTE LIFE March 29. 1929 Cage ChamtJions to Meet All-Star Team at Big Play Rally The Presbyterian basketball quintet, which played twenty-one games in the Playground and Recreation board's league during the past season and lost but one of them, will be pitted against an all-star aggregation chosen from the best players in the remaining eleven teams in the league. The game will be the outstanding feature of the annual Spring banquet of the Recreation board April 11 at the Howard gymnasium and will be played at 8:30 o'clock following the banquet and presentation of awards to the league champions at 6:30 o'clock. All the players on the all-star group have been outstanding in their own teams. Bat Robinson, a stellar forward on the State Bank team for the last three years, is manager and coach of the team and has selected the following players as members of the squad from which he will choose the five to represent the team in the game: Eugene Hardt, forward from the Terminal Athletic club team, who managed to account for 30 points for his team in a single game last winter; Tony Varney,. another udead-eye" forward, a member of the Methodist team; Jack Cullen, star guard of the \Vilmette State Bank team; Wesley Considine, guard from the K. of C. II team who also has an accurate eye for basket shooting; Manning Powers of the Terminal Athletic club team who can be used at both guard and forward; Bob McLean, also of the Terminals, plays both forward and center; Harry Stone, center and forward from the Wilmette State Bank team; Lawrence Roth from the Wilmette State bank who shares his teammate's ability to play in the dual capacity of forward and guard, and Carleton Thorsen of the I. 0. 0. Torrey is the only member of the Wilmette Playground and Recreation board who has never missed a board meeting. Appointed to the board in 1927 to succeed Enoch Steen as representative of the Wilmette Board of. Education, Mr. Torrey has never once in his two years' tenure of office failed to appear at the Village hall at 8 o'clock on the second Thursday of each month to discuss the affairs pertaining to public recreation. He is ·keenly interested in all phases of the recreational program, taking particular interest in the athletic activities. He is a former track man, having been a member of the same track squad at Harvard that boasted former President Little of Michigan as a fellow member. During the week the champions of the league, Presbyterian I team, lost its only game of the season, five games were played where the winner came out only one point ahead, and one game tied. The Terminal A. C., winners in the league last year, dealt out the only defeat to the Presbyterians this year by defeating them 23 to 22 at th(! Howard gymnasium last Wednesday evening. This victory placed the Terminals ahead of the K. of C. II team for second place in the league.
