FAMILY STYLE LAMB CHOP MIXED GRILL The thirtieth annual conv~ation of the Illinois Congress of the ParentTeacher association was held at Mattoon, Ill., April 17 to 20, inclusive. Almost 700 delegates were in attend~ ance when Mrs. H. W. Whitten, state president, officially opened the conven~ tion. Every hour was advantageously ~tanned from 8 :30 a. m. until 10 p. m. There is no selfish gain, no personal aggrandizement, no commercial or trade advantage, and no political preferment that bring these men and women to~ gether. It is rather a virile desire to 3erve. The great body of parents and teachers study school problems and through t_his organization the executive school heads are able to feel the pulse of local sentiment. Mattoon through its school children, teachers, and parents, directed by A. Winfie.ld Henry of New York, a biblical dramatist, ·pre·sented a great pageant. "The Interpreter," which had as its ba·sis the seven cardinal objectives of education as sponsored by the ParentTeacher association. Dr. A. L. Lyman's addres·s on "Making a Living," was voted one of the real features of the four~day program. Dr. Lyman took as his theme a qu9tation from Lowell's "Vision of Sir Launfal"-"Over our manhood bend the skies." He placed upon it the interpretation that there is unbounded opportunity in the world for alL A school-boy's interpretatiot. would be, he said, "The sky's the limit." Dr. Lyman took occasion to rondemn classroom methods that instill in the pupil the idea of perpetual rlefeat. He said, "Habituating in failure is not the right way to educate any boy or girl." · He took time to explain the effects of speed drilts and the sense of defeat which it leaves upon the ·s lower pupil. "Our schools are shot through with thtl thought among pupils that success means beating the other children," Dr. Lyman pointedly told the dele~ g-ates, "while it should mean to them the bettering of their own achievements in order to reach succes·s." "It is not success in the class room .for a child to stand at the top," Dr. Lyman declared, "hut success for the school child mean.:; for him to stand on his o,,-n past efforts." N. A.
