Club Urg·' Support of Courtney BiD in Petition Circulated Throughout State Petitions asking Illinois state senators to support the passap,e of a bill providing for reducing Illinois passenger car license fees by 50 percent have been placed in circulation by the Chicago Motor club at its main office in Chicago, and at branches covering fifty-one counties in northern Illinois. The bill providing for the reduction is now pending in the state legislature. It was drafted by the motor club and introduced by State Senator Thomas J. Courtney. Here'a Petition The petitions, which are self explanatory, state: "Whereas, a gasoline tax of 3 cents per gallon will be effective · August 1, 1929, in this state; and "Whereas, the tax will be in addition to existing state automobile license registration fees; and "\Vhereas, we believe that the gasoline tax and existing registration fees will comprise excessive taxation of the owners of passenger cars in Illinois; a no · \ Vhereas, we are convinced that existing registration fees could be reduced 50 percent and that the revenue from that source, combined with the ren~ nue that the gas tax will produce, would be entirely adequate for the construction of new highways, and for the maintenance, widening of and construction of grade separations on existing highways; "Xow, therefore, we petition you to seek the passage of a bill, now pending in the general assembly, which provides for a reduction of 50 percent in the registration fees on passenger automob:Ies." Traveling Abroad? The Chicago Motor club touring bureau in view of the fact that all indications point to a record number of Americans shipping their automobiles abroad and touring this year, pointed out the best months in which to travf!1 in old world countries. The information follows: British Isles-April to October. France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium have practically the same touring seasons, with splendid weather along the French Riviera during the winter months. In Switzerland, Italy, and Austria the passes are not open until well into June. Outside of the mountain regions very good weather prevails from the middle of April well .into November, with winter touring in Southern Italy being very popular. Czechoslovakia and Hungary are best during the summer months and this is also true of Roumania, Bulgaria, Poland, ·a nd Jugo-Slavia. Along the Dalmatian coast, one can tour earlier but in the interior the roads do not become good until early summer. In southern Spain the spring com~s early. The winter in the north is not pleasant until the end of April, although on the Cantabrian coast one can motor all year. Norway, Sweden. Denmark, and Finland are pleasant prindpa Jly from May until fall. In North Africa the touring season ts from October to May. Distinguished by ·a Deep REGARD HERE can be no conceit in claiming America'sdeep ·regard for Pierce-Arrow. It is a sentiment that has its roots in a former generation- and is warmly present in today's. But ~he significant point is why this lS so: · Perhaps the chief reason is the inherent fineness of the car. Never has it known a compromise with quality - never a departure from the patrician way that has always been Pierce- Arrow. And so in cleaving to its own ideals it has won the loyalty of~ nation. The new Straight Eight caine into this great heritage at the psychological moment in Pierce- T Arrow history. Fine car owners had so wearied of bulk and stodginess in their automobiles that this fresh, slender creation of Pierce-Arrow made record conquests from the moment of its introduction. No other fine car in America today knows so great a waiting demand. ..
