W I L M E T T E' L I F E May 31, 1929 Spo,rts and Other Wilmette Recreation Board News New Trier Diamond Talent Takes EQsy Game From Deerfield By Jamea Baker Last Friday, Coach Aschenbach's New Trier baseball boys journeyed to Deerfield and returned at the long end of an 11 to 5 store. The game was featured by Captain Thompson's fine pitching in the pinches and by the re· turn of Saxton's hitting ability. · The Indian Hill lads started right off in the first inning with a spurt .that left their opponents gasping, and they steadily increased their lead throughout the game. Bud Thompson walked to start the first inning and went to second on Wolter's sacrifice bunt. M unn singled, scoring Thompson, and took s~cond while the ball was being thro~n in to try to get Thompson at the plate. Borncamp popped to Maloney. Way Thompson singled through Rogan, scoring M unn. Smit!_l singled, Thompson stopping at second; Paulson singled, scoring Th9mpson and Smith. Nelson grounded to Rogan to end the inning. Deerfield did not score in the first. New Trier got three more runs in their half of the second on a double by Saxton and singles by Munn, Way Thompson and Smith. Deerfield scored in the second on a hit by Segart, who stole second and was driven in on a single by Maloney. Saxton opened the third with a single over second base. ·He scored or1 two fielder's choices. New Trier did not score again until the seventh. when Way Thompson singled. Paulson was hit by the pitcher, Nelson singled, and Saxton got his third hit of the day, a double to deep right-center. Deerfield scored one each, in ·the fourth, fifth. sixth, and seventh innings. Another feature of the game was Captain \Vay's hitting. In four times up, he got three singles and a triple, a tremendous drive over the right fielder's head; the ball rolled up to the tennis .courts some four hundred feet away, and many thought that Wav should have come home on it but- he played it safe and stayed third. Saturday, Proviso comes · to New Trier for the last game of the season. New Trier lost when they traveled to Marwood and are out to avenge· this defeat. Diamond · Hopefuls, 6 to 4 By AI Schaefer The Wilmette Chamber of Commerce baseball aggregation suffered the season's first defeat Sunday at the Village Green when Judge Bob McMillan's Merrimacs overcame a threerun handicap, and, with the aid of local misplays, emerged on the long end of a 6-4 score. The set-back was particularly distressing to Bruce Kennedy, southpaw, who hurled good ball but was forced to retire in the eighth inning after a walk, a fatal error and a homer had given the visitors the lead. Kenny, rangy right-hander for the Chicagoans, pitched britliantly after a woozy first inning. He allowed only four hits and one run, and was supported steadily during the last eight stanzas. His four-bagger in the eighth cinched the game for him. In the home half of the first, J anetz opened ·with a scratch single and Porterfield strolled. Smith sacrificed and Boree walked, filling the bases. Liepe'e grounder toward second was · fumbled and J anetz tallied. Baker's single drove home Porterfield and Borre. Kennedy pitched out of danger in the first two frames but the Merrimacs counted in the third. Quan reached first on Borre's error. Flynn tapped to l!.orre and both runners were safe when Baker dropped the throw on a force-play at second. Quartetlo sent Quan in with a sharp single to left. In the fifth Muldowney singled and was sacrificed t.Q ~econd by Quan. Meehan fouled to Kassel but the visitor scored when Liepe fumbled Flynn's grounder. The eighth was a disastrous affair for Wilmette. Quartello walked. Schaefer sacrificed, Borre to Kassel, and the runner went to third on the play when no one covered the bag. Friedman hit to Baker and Quartelto was nipped at the plate. Daly singled to center, Friedman going to third and continuing on home when Janetz heaved the pill over Borre's head. Kenny then socked his homer to right center. scoring Daly ahead of him. Phillips replaced Kennedy and he fanned Muldowney for the third out. In the last half of the eighth Burmeister batted for Smith and drew a pass. Braun ran for him. He went to second on a passed ball, to third on Liepe's infield out and scored on Tagmeier's single to center, Box score: Wilmette AB. .Janetz, cf. . .. ..... .. ... 5 Porterfwld, rf. . . . .... 3 Smith, If. . . ..... . .. ..... . 2 Braun, rf . . . .. . . . ..... ... 0 Borre, 3b. . . . ... ... .. .... 3 Liepe, ss . ..... . .. ... . .... 4 Ka~::;el, lb. . ...... .. ... . . 3 ·ragtmPier, lb. . .......... 1 Baker, 2b. . . ... .. .. ... . 4 Hobin:son, c. .... .. .... .. . 4 Kennedy, p. 3 .
