Pa .. m·er the holidays. rooms. St. Francis' hospital of Evanston has achieved a place on the 1929 World Wide Hospital Honor roll which is annually compiled by the American College of Surgeons. Hospitals in all countries of the world strive to be placed. on this list of approved hospitals on which only progressive and reputable institutions abiding by the strictest scientific regulations may hope to appear. The Amencan College of Surgeons is an organization independent of all bospitals, which rates the work of institutions on basis of sheer merit. Hospitals are investigated by the college and it decides whether or not the institution deserves recognition. The result of the investigation, the name of the hospital either appears on the honor roll or does not appear as the case may be. Because a hospital is once approved it does not follow that it will retain its place on the honor roll, for a yearly check is made by the college and hospitals must maintain their high · standing- in order to retain their place. Of the 7,800 hospitals in the United States and Canada, less than 1,000 of n1ore than 100 beds are on the honor roll and less than 600 of between SO and 100 beds. Honor roll hospitals in 1929 have shortened the stay of their patients an average of two and a half to three days and have materially reduced the death rate through reduced infections, more expert service and increased use of X-ray laboratories and physiotherapeutic equipment.
