.. 64 WILMETTE LIFE D«ember 6, 1929 Fine Performance by Graham-Paige Over Loop in Texas To prove the wide range of usefulness possessed by the internal-geared silent third speed of the modern type four-speed transmission, a GrahamPaige 827 sedan was recently put over the circuit of the San Antonio Scenic . Loop, covering the 40 miles in 50 min:.. utes, having been started in third and having finished the test without using any other speed. To accomplish this feat without changing gears requires a transmission ratio that will deliver lots of power for climbing steep hills, and in addition be capable of maintaining high road speed. The silent third of the Graham- Paige transmission was designed to provide these two qualities, its ratio being intermediate between second and high speeds of three-speed gearsets. Covering the 40-mile Loop circuit in 50 minutes required high speeds whereever possible, and the third speed proved capable of maintaining a pace of 60 miles an hour. The engine remained cool throughout the test, the indicator showing 195 degrees at its highest point. Road.
