Basketeers to Meet Notre Dame Squad on Dec. 31 Coach "Dutch" Lonborg, quite pleased. with the showing of his Northwestern cagers in their two point victory over Notre Dame, granted the boys a Christmas present in the form of a week's vacation from practice. The Wildcat basketball tossers were ordered to take things easy and not report for practice until Thursday, December 26. A return game with Notre Dame is slated for New Year's eve at Patten gym. The Purple mentor feels that he has organized a cmnbination which should function in a creditable manner in the games to come. The two veteran forwards, Bergherm and Riel, appear to have hit the stride which they maintained last season. The former went an a rampage against the Irish, sinking six field goals and a free throw. Capt. Rut Walter is still handicapped from an injured knee for which he underwent an operation early in the fall. However, he has been tossing in his share of the baskets and as the season advances he should devlop into one of the outstanding centers in the Conference. Much of the Wildcats success in their early season games has been due to the fine playing of the two sophomore guards, Bob McCarnes and Bob Lockhart. Both of these boys, despite their inexperience, have been playing airtight ball. Against Notre Dame they forced the Irish boys to resort to long shots throughout the game. Besides being first rate guards both · are accurate shots and can be figur~d on scoring frequently. In the over tune period against Notre Dame it was Lockhart's field goal and free throw that decided the game in Northwestern's fa vor. McCarnes scored three times from beyond the middle of the floor in the Pittsburgh encounter.
