Hansen, Sigrid (Died)

Sigrid Hansen, 73, of 3304 Culver St. in Evanston, died Wednesday at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Born in Chicago in 1897, she later moved to Evanston, where she lived for nearly 60 years, and became a co-founder of the Evanston Review. She was graduated from Evanston High School in 1915, and immediately took a position as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Evanston News Index, a former daily newspaper in Evanston. As a member of the former Trinity Lutheran Church in Evanston, she performed as an accomplished organist. On several occasions during her newspaper career, she considered an independent career in the musical field, according to a close friend. But in 1925, she joined with two other members of the Index staff, Edward R. Ladd, and Walter Lovelace, and the three resigned from the daily newspaper to from [sic] the Evanston Review. The Review was co-owned by ladd [sic] and Lloyd Hollister, who later founded the Lake County Newspapers. Miss Hansen became secretary-treasurer of the newspaper under business manager Ladd and editor Lovelace. Meanwhile in 1938, Miss Hansen transferred her church membership to the Edison Park Lutheran Church, and discontinued her public musical performances. In 1956, Ladd's share of The Review was purchased by Lloyd Hollister, Inc., and the Evanston paper became the sixth in the Hollister chain. Miss Hansen then became secretary-treasurer of the Hollister-owned North Shore Publications. Her retirement in 1963 marked a 48-year career in the newspaper business, and 38 years with Hollister Publications. "She was a very capable girl," Hollister recalls, "who worked seven days a week and every night if necessary." Services were held Friday at Scott's Funeral Home in Wilmette. Interment was at Olive Cemetery in Chicago.
