Matthew J. Hickey Jr., 72, of 1630 Sheridan Rd., Wilmette, died Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mr. Hickey was president of Hickey and Co. and honorary director of Motorola, Inc. He lived in Winnetka for 40 years before moving to Wilmette in 1966. He began his career in the securities business as an office boy. By the time he was 22, he was manager of the trading department of Halsey, Stuart, and Co. In 1927, he formed the firm of Hickey, Doyle and Co., and ten years later established the investment banking firm of Hickey and Co. In addition to being president of Hickey and Co., Mr. Hickey served as director and financial consultant to Motorola Inc., and as director of the Chicago Rivet and Machine Co. until 1968. In May 1968, he was elected an honorary director of Motorola. For many years he was president of the Allerton Hotel and a director of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad, Clinton Foods, Inc., and the Morrison Hotel. He was a trustee of the John P. Harding estate for 20 years. Mr. Hickey served as a director of the Catholic Charities of Chicago and as a member of the advisory board of St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. For the past 38 years he has been on the board of lay trustees of Loyola University. In recognition of his Catholic and civic leadership, Pope Pius XII presented Mr. Hickey with membership in the Sovereign Military Order of Knights of Malta. Surviving are his wife, Naomi; a daughter, Mrs. Susanne Howell; four sons, John T., Matthew J. III, Thomas P., and Jerome E.; three sisters, Mary, Loretta, and Jule; a brother, Daniel; and 16 grandchildren. Services are to be arranged.
