New-Trier llih Sch ool News Students Observe Americanism Day Americanism day is to be observed in the adviser rooms Friday of this week. Gounty Superintendeiit of Schools Otto Aken bas asked aIl of Cook county's schools to join in the observance. .Plans for Armistice day als o are being made at NewTrier. Since the day falîs on Sunday thiis year, it will be observed at the high school the following day. Student speakers will give talks in ail of the adviser rooms on subjects related to Armistice day. These student speakers are being trained in Miss Mabelle Payton's public speak- ing classes. Bety Burlingm Junior President The junior class bas elected Betty Burlingham president, Tad Harvey, vice-president, Shirley McCoy, secre- tary, and Tomý Gallagher treasurer. Next week the senior class offices will be filled. Petitions for the vani- ous candidates are being circulated this week, and the candidates wil be presented at the first senior as- sembly of the year next Monday. The election will be held later in the week. Frederick A. Kahler, dean of boys. and Miss -Helen Maloney are the senior class sponsors. S. S. Vernon and Miss Frances Flentve, are spon- sors for the junior class. Holiday on the Way, But Not for Freshmen There will be no school for New Trier students, with the exception of freshmen. oni Thursday, November. 8. because of the annual freshman par- ents'* night. The schedule for al freshmen that day .ill begin at 3 :50 o'clock in the afternoon and end at 9 :05 o'clock in the evening. Regular class periods wiIl be twenty-five min- utes in length.' Forty minuteý have been allotted for each of the three lunch perîods. The first adviser perio(l will last oîîlv five minutes and the second adviser period at the close of the day twenty minutes. Plan Psychological Tests for Seniors SPsychological examînations for New Trier seniors will be given on Novem- ber 6. These examinations, which are similar to those used by many colleges for students entering as fr.eshmen,. are given annually at New Trier. One reason for. this is that colleges frequently request that the prospective students' record in such psychological tests be forwarded along with bis high school credits. W. L. "BIG SISTER'" TEAS The sophomore girls' adviser rooins have:been busy this week with their 1big' sister" teas for the freshman girls. Stuýdent Council Organization Is Completed for Term Organizationi of the student council was completed Wednesday of this week with the election of officers from the membership of the intnner council. Don Anderson was elected pre sident, Claire Nix vice president and jean Cutier secretary. The inner couincil meets with Supt. M. P. Gaif- ney every Monday. Its members are: Don Anderson, Bill White, Natalie Macdonald and Claire- Nix, seniors; Gerald Taber, DeWitt Jones. jean Cutier and Beth Bryson, juniors; jack Byrum and Barbara Finiley sophomores, and Dick Wagner andà Nancy Palmer freshmen. The student council plan was adopt- ed at New Trier last year. The large or main council bas representatives from every adviser room, who mieet once a week with Superintendent Gaffney. The smaller inner council bas an equal number of boy and girl representatives. The two upper classes. are giýven larger representation on the muner counicil. Chess Club Now Boasts' Its Own Room at Sehool The New Trier chess club activities this year are. centered in room 411, which has been set aside for the use of the club. Up to this year the or- ganization had no such room and it was impossible to leave chess tables up so that those wishing to play could do so ini their leisure tirne. Opening of the new laboratory and classroom addition at the beginning of this school year, made possible the allotting of space for chess club activities. The club meets twice a month.« Lahman Arnould is the president, and J. C. Schumacher is the faculty sponsor. Mr. Schumacher said this week that the club needs more chess tables and sets. Donations of sets or- tables nîo longer. being used by their owniers would be appreciated. lie stated. Teachers' Conference at New Trier Saturday The conference Saturday of thi.. week at New Trier for F.nglish and social science teachers fromn a group of higli schools, including Newv Trier. the University of Chicago High scliool, North Shore Counitry Day school, the University of WVisconsin High school and the Francis Parker school in Chicago, will start.at 9 :30 o'clock and last- until noon. It wvill be followed by luncheon. Later in the year a conference-of other de- partments from -the five high schools may be hield. A general conference to follow this also bas been discussed. Tri. Ship Club Dance Set for November. 10 Plans for the Tri-Ship club dance on Saturday nigbt, November 10, are going ahead under the direction of J im Donovan,- who is a busy yo ung man these days. Donovan,, besides being Tri-Ship treasurer 'and dance chairman, is editor-in-chief of the yearbook. It is the plan of the Tri- Ship boys to have, a number'of the parents present at the dance as patrons and patronesses. The Senior Music club is meeting Tbursday of this week at the home of Claire Nix in Wirmetka.
