Thle prograim conistea of Schumann's quartet ini A miner, Opus 41, No. 1, two Contrapuncti by Bach, and Bee- * thoven's quartet in F major, Opus 135, played. in the rallier unusual- order, given above.. To me :this quartet was. outstanding in one quality in, particular - that of impersonality. By that I mean, none of the. four artists -strove to empbasize' his own in.terpretation, tone, or tech- nical proficiency, above bis fellow art- ists. In «j udging *the performance of any specific ,movemient, one found one- self judging nlot the, four men playing the môvement, but the composer. To these men "Schumann or Bach, which- ever it, migbt. be, was the important artist at that moment. It seems a pity -to me that this 'quality of impersonal- ity-is se f requentlyomitted in group, playrng.: since only through the sub- merging of the individual personalities can thé true spirit of tbe composer Of this particular program I en- joyed most the Schumann quartet. The men took it at unusually fast tempo, which demonstrated immediately their rbyvtbmic ensemble andi technical agit- it.The faster movements expresseci the temperament of this group more fitly. since in the more legato pbras- ing one f elt a slight lack' in the first violin. However, this was more than made up for by the 'celle, wbich was particularly beautiful in the Bach Con-' trapuncti which f ollowed. As a climaxc.te endi a season, and as an intêere4ing contrast te our nla-, tive -artists the afternoon was of great interest. Certainly it renewed our opinion that our own Philharmonic is welI able to compete with even more famous quartets. Pleciges are now being signed for' next season. and it is indeed a pleasure« to have so near at'hand an organiza- tion that consistetitly pleases. Anong the citations which coin- prised the lesson-sermon was the fol- lowing from the Bible: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likenesa: and let tbem have dominion oveér the fish, of the sea, and over the f", of the' air, and over, the' cattle,- and, over ail the earth, and over every creeping tbing that creepeth upon the. earth..- So Codi created man in his, own image, in the image of Goci created be him" (Geënesig 1:-26,> 27). The. lesson-sermon also includeci the -following passages, from the Christian -Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key, to 'the Scrip- tures,' by Mary Baker Eddy. "The Scriptures inform us that man is mn.ade in the image and likeness of God. Matter is tiot.that likeness. The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlilce Spirit. Man is spiritual and perfect, and because hie is spiritual and per- fect, hie nust lè so ' understood in Christian Science" (p. 475).
