It is nothing less than a shamie that a body of more than seventy-five' citizens, representing an accurate cross-section of the citizenship of Wilmette? bas worked for weeks. and months to secure candidates for Village offices, ivithout factional or political. affiliations, and just as it appeared that its labors were tobe grate- f ully accepted., a small group should inject. itself into the picture and put up'an opposition ticket, thus 'plunging -thevillage.into another campaign that cannot resûlt in any good. The Harmony convention, which announced its candidates a f ew wceks ago, is a non-partisan -and ýnon-polIitical body, created to fiiudmen and women to serve the Village., As one-half its me m-t lership is replaced each election year by an impartial committee of citizens, -there are no, inside cliqties., It is composed of fourî delegates f rom each of the thirteen voting precincts. Until Monday 'the ticket nominated by the Harmony con- vention seemed to be generally acceptable. Then, within, the space of a couple of days, a small group entered the picture with an oppo- sition ticket in an attempt to undo ail the work of hundreds of. citizens over a period of years, to bring about unified action and hiarmOîny. The Independent candidate for Village treasurer bas publicly stated that he does not believe in this method of selecting . candidates, regardless of benieficial opération in Winnetka for many years. WILMETTE LIFE has long been an exponent of the harmony idea in Village affairs, especiallyi the selection of candidates for the Village board and other governing bodies. It believes, and bas so stated many tinies, that in sniall comnuinities such as ours there is absolutely no need f or f actional strif e i Village managé- nment, nor in choosing themen and women wvho eau serve only at a sacrifice of tinie and personal conifort. WIMETELIFE thus plainly states its position because it be- ieyes that thé interests of the village can be best promoted by the non-factional and>noni-political method. Tfiis is the question -which voters iuust decide at the Village élection on.
