Minâ€"At 9:45 Tuesday evening a xerrible explosion took place on board the United States cruiser Maine in Havana harbor. Many were killed or wulmde‘d. All of (he boats of the a‘pauish cruiser Alfonso Xll. are as- sisting. As yet the cause of me explosion in not apparent. The wounded sailors of the Maine are unable to explain it. At midnight what re- msins of the Maine is still burning. Over 100 Killed. Capt. Sigsbee and the other officers have been saved. It is esximated that over 100 of the crew were killed, but it is impossible as yet to give exact details. -" n Admiral Mame-r0121 hns m» ered that bows of all kinds should go to the as- sistance of me Maine and her wounded. The Havana. firemen are ginng aid tending carefuliv to the Wounded as they are brought (m shore. L It is a terrible sight. Gen. Solano and the other generals have been or- dered by ("apt (icn. lllunco to take steps to help the Maine's crew in every way possible. The correspondent of the Associntml Press has been near the Maine in one of the boats of the cruiser Alfonso Xll. nml suvn others of the wounded who corroborate the state» mentof thosefirstinterviewed that they were already asleep when the explo- sion occurred. May Have Been Denunled. No explan'ation of the explosion has been obtainable up to this time. It is assumed that one of the ship's mega- zines blew up or bombs were placed be- side her and set off by Spaniards. The excitement is so intense that the military authorities have ordered troops to quarters. and the streets are fi with crowds of excited citizens an - soldiers jostling each other. At this hour (two t. m.) the hull of the Maine is burning and the flames illuminate the entire harbor Thou- sands have gathered at the water front to witness the unusual spectacle. R is clear to those on shore that the vesst‘} is sinking and will soon be at the bottom of the bay. The whole city seems on the verge of a panic. Capt. Sigsbee says the explosion oc- curred in the bow of the vessel. He re< ceived a wound in the head. Orders were given to the other ofiivers to save themselves as best they could. The lat- ter, who were literally throwft from their bunks in their night clothing, gave the necessary orders with great self-possession and brava-y. Capt. Slxnhee'n Report. Washington.
