Prof. Rolfe’s lecture on the “Hermit of Walden Pond,” at the Club House, Tuesday evening, many say, was his best this year. It was a masterly discourse; no doubt as to that. Thoreau was a strong, stalwart man physically, strong minded and as strongly conâ€" ceited, for none but a conceited man would "stand up” to. his col- lege professors as he did. ‘But all these were minor things, the real greatness of Thoreau was in 'his sublime hatred and contempt of shams of all kinds, or veneered lives and methods of living, of the enormous waste of life on worth- less objects, low ideals and aims, starting for nowhere and ending in nothing. Alongside of this was his mas- terful power of observation of IREâ€" ture in her multiplied forms. from the form or'slmpe ofa snow flake to how a sparrow feeds. His was not only a genius for such things, but a marvelous genius. Not one person in ten thousand had his ability in this line, or could no- quire. his skill any more than some physicians can acquire skill to make a correct diagnosis, while others do it by intuition. In all this he. stood apart from and abovo his follows. ewn the most gifted, just as Napoleon stood apart from all men since Caesar or Paul. \Vhen it comes to his moral power or influence, wethink it has been very greatly over estimated, as hm»; been that of Emerson and other men of that class. of which more hereafter. But the lecture was deeply interesting and pro- duced a profound impression and all who heard it want to hear the next one on Whittier. Keeping Up The Interest. They must have some rallying cry in Chicago all the year round. Last week it was “Register! Register!" This week it is “Boil the waterl"â€"â€"- Clevalaml Plain Dealer. PROF. ROLFE 0N THOREAU
