The establishment of a system of permanent. improved highways is of far greater importance than the Yigging of the Panama Canal. The pub- ic roads are used not by the few. but by every one. They are owned by the peo ple. paid for by the people. It behooves every one therefore to join in helping procure for the American states the very best highways possible at the very min- imum of expense" ' â€The American Road Builders' As- sociation at the annual American Good Roads Congress and Road: Show is try. ing to prevent further waste. In past years the Association, composed as it is of the formost engineers of the country. has succeeded in exposing many false the- ories of road construction. and in pro- viding new methods and new materials with which to meet the problems raised by the introduction of the automobile and other fast and heavy trafï¬c. “How great a saving there would have been to the people of the United States". aid 3. Think of the worthless plank roads. the miles of rot- ten cedar blocks! Had all the money that has been spent gone into good con~ sanction, the country by this time would Inve- N3 start in the permanent improve- ment of its highways. There will be no tuition fee. The American public has already paid. Every year it costs every man, woman and child in the United States 51200 as his share in the cost of bad roads. Every year It costs $500,000,000 to move the American crop of 265,000,000 bushels to market. Of this sum. one-half is waste due to bad roads. Everybody paysâ€"the consumer in higher cost, the producer in lower proï¬ts. The waste of a single year would build 200.000 miles of improved highway. The waste of ten years would remake the entire road system of the country at $5,000 a mile. Chicago is to have a good roads school. 1: will be the biggest good roads school since :he days of Caesar. Twenty-ï¬ve hundred mayors of the middle west will (tend. Three or four thousand state. county and township road commissioners will be there. Automobilists. farmers, and busmess men from all over the Unit- ed States will swell the enrollment to 10.000. The school is to be conducted at the International Amphitheatre at the Union Stock Yards. The name of the institu- tr mll be the Fifth Annual American (Mod Roads Congress and the Sixth An- nual Good Roads Show and it will be conducted by the American Road Build- ers' Association and about one hundred other organizations interested in good roads.
