Farmer, chief of the local fire department, who attended the horny-eighth annual convention of the Illinois Firemen's Association held at Murphysboro last week re- mm A verv Md time and desires to state that the program of the! business section of the convention was business from start to finish. Many splendid addresses were given by him who are members or are in some way associated with the fire depart- ments in the various cities of Illi- nois. The addresses dealt mostly with , the idea of a better equipment of the} departments all over the state fora the benefit of life and property. also; for the betterment of the conditions 01 the firemen and their association. Among the many facts brought out at this meeting concerning the vari- ous departments was one of great interest to many cities the size of Highland Park, and that is, the lack of interest shown by the citizens to- wad the department and oftentimes the lack of, interest the department has in itself. This condition should not exist. Nearly five hundred dele- lites attended the convention. W Tenn Defeated Wilmette Sat .43, Night. “Cub” Moon sad F. Lowellyn Win Lu! Rocord Brokon on Nodh Shore for Win- ter Bin!- An inquiry made among thoseil' maintaining shelters and feeding shelves for birds shows that the se- vere cold weather has not been mark- ed by the disappearance of the birds but rather has increased their at- tendance at the lunch counters. At several places chicksdees are daily visitors and their songs have been heard in the coldest weather. Juncoes have been seen feeding about chicken yards along with English sparrows. Some of the guests at the Moraine have been successful in attracting chickadees to their window ledges by hanging up suet and scattering sun- flower seeds. and are now holding ob- servation parties in their rooms. the} readily come in through the open‘ . window when given a chance. A pair'1 iof cardinals feed regularly on sun-l, flower seeds at the same place. There, too, and at other places hairy and downy woodpeckers. nut-hatches and juncoes and an occasional jay come close to the windows to get their food. i From reports it would seem that there are four or five pairs of cardinals in’ Highland Park at the present time. i A single solitary robin was seenl on Mr. A. J. Metzel's grounds about‘1 Christmas time and after being ad-l mired by several persons disappeared? i'I'he Press will appreciate any in‘i iformation as to its whereabouts. Waukegan is now priding herself upon what is a really remarkable winter record, namely that a flock of grackles numbering twelve or fifteen {is spending this wintry season there. For the past two weeks or so they have been appearing on frozen lawns to receive contributions from humane persons. The most experienced bird Eyobserver “in these parts," which is glienry K. Coale. has never heard of l wssku¢vowvv'__.. WW Chickadees furnishing entertainment... At Dr. Hamilton’s house chickadees ‘ ll a similar winter record in the north shore region. Observers report the presence of raccoons at the present time, also. At two diflerent times two raccoons have been seen feeding near one of the houses not far from the Ravine Drive. Each time they were surprised by the bright lights of the automobile. The Press suggests that dwellers in that part of our city scatter cabbage leaves and carrots or other vegetable food about their back yards and make life attractive for these interesting ani- mals. and magic impomd to A mond Hitchcock, Mack : Mnbel Normand will be production.
