Railn own the railroads. [finder pr found they couldissue twenty- cents per ride and make mane that the railroads didn‘_t knm they had been selling rides at NIWHH‘II Vice And with all this there comes. quite naturally, the concomit- ant reduction of cost. Railroad fares (lriip because the people own the railroads. L'nder private ownership the companies found they couldissue twenty-five ride tickets at about twenty-six cents per ride and make money. But the government discovered that the railroads didn‘t know their own business, that in fact they had been selling rides at a loss for years and didn't know it. But the recent decree of a federal official strikes a triple hammer blow at some of our most cherished illusions: govern- ment ownership for one, state rights. democracy. This official deprives the people of the north shore of their customary reduced rite and forbids the issuing of twenty-five ride tickets. No hear in: was had. No opportunity to present any facts offered. The powers that be silently and secretly decreed that hereafter all citizens except those who might ride continuously should pay a fare shddenly increased from twenty-nine cents per ride to forty-six or sixty-nine cents. Those who are interested in the trend of history find thtt a democracy when it assumes the powers of government in time of war takes on the form and exercises the powers of autocrscy. The recent decree of the Railroad Administration gives us a con- crete example and simplifies the history -lessons for the seeker after knowledge. Years ago our state passed a law requiring all railroads to charge not to exceed two cents a mile. The Interstate Commerce Cmmission attempted to..set this law/epide’ but the Supreme Court declared the commissionér's decree illegal. ‘ * n .n‘ ,_,:I‘-_1_ 5|... * hen came war and t! .mnch-talkedâ€"of government and inspiring thfle- We We care if they have decreed our twen‘ hunted and that hereafter. those who can do so by contributgng three cents tremhry for final distribution among t holders and bond holders of the railro: can do so by contributgn mam-y for final distribl holders anti bond holders glorious feval'lnz-‘i’n’t it ‘ nine cents every time we the blessing of riding 0'7 Entered as second class matter March 1. 19x1 It If Fire Should Destroy )()H\ A BL'\.\H,1 HIGHLAND PARK TRUST 8C SAVINGS BANK the guvm‘nmvm mum timv \u- \VL'I’: pr<udtttx Why Assume the Risk your home. would your valuable papers such as deeds, insurance policies, notes and bonds be safe? when for three dollars you can rent a box in OUR MODERN FIREPROOF V'AULTS?
