It. is estimated that there are about 4091“ this class within our district. i; Fifteen cities in Illinois have Voted to establish part time schools in January 1921 {Or children in employment between the ages of 14 and 16 years of age. These cities have taken advanâ€" tage of the “optional mandatory" law which makes eight hours a week of contiuation school education compulsory on all young people of Highland Park ever inaugurated and it deserves the en- large number of young people who enter these schools have tin- ished not more than five or six grades in the grammar school. The state superintendent has interpreted the law to imply that these as well as more advanced students shall enter the public high schools. The hours of tuition are fixed by the law between the hours of 8 a. m. and :3 p. m. not including Saturday afternoon. ‘ In the J. Sterling Morton high school six hundred such stu- dents are enrolled. They are taught by regular high school teachers. graduates of universities and colleges: and they attend for approximately one and one half hours on each of the live school days. In Joliet a different plan has been worked out. 'l‘he' students are taught by teachers who have been experienced in the grade schools. They go to school one day a week, and for full eight hours on that day.
