According to the city's plan only the southern part of Sheri- dan road is to he straigtened out. Why not go a step further and straighten out the road through the entire city. locating it far- ther east to avoid the congestion of the business district? This is a step in the right direction. Sheridan road takes a meandering course through Highland Park. It is full of curves that are confusing to motorists not familiar with the road. and dangerous to all. There is no other city between Lake Bluff and Chicago where this much-used highway passes through the busi- ness district. The three blocks of pavement oné St. Johns avenue south of Central avenue are often jammed with through traffic, and many accidents occur. It is necessary for the city to have a traffic officer at the corner of St. Johns and (‘entral avenues to keep the lines of vehicles untangled. All this. might be avoided if a new route were established for Sheridan road through the out lying districts. CHANGING SHERIDAN ROAJ) "Straightening out the kinks" of Sheridan‘rnad through the south end of Highland Park. paving it. and constructing new bridges and culverts is the plan under consideration by the city. Prof. C. C. Wiley, chief of the highway section Of the engineering department of the University of Illinois, is in charge of the “ark. Prof. Wiley is making a survey, and pieparing plans and esti- mates for the cost of the work. If all the citizens with full knowledge of the facts. elect un- Worthy men to office or endorse bad measures, then the people must bear the blame TheV are no less blamew'mtm if the men and measures get in through their carelessness. It is to be hoped that the Chicago Association of Commerce will succeed in stirring up the last voter in the» municipality. and itisthen to be devoufly hoped that mune or anhatnnrin each community will take up the same work until t 9 state is stinetl sothatbad men and had nmasu1essha” notlnianowed hishp through Abuses cannot exist very long with all the people “on the job” and demanding to be shown the reason for each move. Nothing will so discourage the political grafter as the feeling that all the voters take an interest in all the elections. They must then come to be familiar with both men and measures. and that is what will save the state. ‘ All the evil things that are now being sairl by the tun) fac- tions of the Republican party about each othe: were said before the primaries last year. Now the state's itizenship seems shoe ked at the revelations. It was all discussed in meetings dui ing the campaign but few heard it because few topk anv inteiest in the primary campaign. Illinois ought to take the lesson to heart. Such a movement should be started in every community. The neason for so much corruption in the political layoout today is that so few voters take any interest in the affairs of politics. This makes the matter easy for the few scheming fellows..who wantlto manipulate the governmental machinery for their own profit.
