NO SENSE 0F HUMOR Orton Tewson tells this story by Courtny Ryley Cooper. the well known writer of circus stories: “Coop,” as he is known to his friends. had engaged a London ’bus drivbr to Show him the sights of the town. A rival cab- man approached from the opposite direction. “What in the deuce was it all about. “’ 'Cooper asked when the second cab had passed by. “0h, he ain’t got no sense of humor,” replied the driver dis- gustedlyQ “Why‘did you dangle that string at him?" “Well _yer see, sir, it‘s like this ‘er‘e. ’Is brother was hanged this moming.’ . tables. KEEP FIT Keeping fit is the duty of every worker to himself and to his job. Here is a list of things recommended by Dr. Royal S. (‘ope- land, health commissioner of New York City. who urges their adoption by all who desire to maintain their physical and mental powers at high standard: Spend ten minutes a day in setting-up exercises. Sleep with windows open. Secure what sunshine you can. Spend a minimum of ten hours during the week in the open air. Balance work and play. Walk at least three miles each day. Treat your stomach with respect. Do not over-eat. Eat meat not more than once a day. Balance your meals with fruit, green salads. and other vege- Recent analyses of lake water at the bathing beach' have re- vealed the fact that it is polluted and unsafe, according to the Board of Health. Various reasons for this condition have been advanced. One very evident evil. which may be a cause of the impure water. waa discovered this week by a representative of The Press, in an investigation at the water front. It was found that the sewer basin at the foot of the Park avenue ravine had become clogged in some manner, and that some of the sewage was leaking out into the ravine, and emptying in the lake. A fairly large pool of sewer water lay on the beach, a breeding place for disease and mosquitos. This condition should be remedied. The “Cross Crossings Cautiously" campaign and all other safety propaganda will not. change human nature nor sharpen human eyes. Some lives will be saved. but there will always be grade crossing accidents as long as there are grade crossings. The C. N. W. railroad crosses Waukegan road just west of Lake Bluff. This is only one of many grade crossings on highways in this vicinity. It is indeed a pity that the same civilization which puts high voltage wires safely over the heads of the people doesn't also put the trains there. These hays were on their way to Lake Beulah. \\'i.<.. fur a short vacation. They failed to see the train approaching until thv locomotive was upon them. There wax nw (mt-ape.
