Survived by: His parents, Dr. John and Mary Kennicott; two sisters, Alice Kennicott Reilly and Cora Kennicott Redfield; his uncle, William Kennicott whose great-grandson, Harrison (Red( (Katie) Kennicott runs Kennicott Brothers, a Chicago wholesaler of plants and flowers
Age 30; born in New Orleans LA to Dr. John and Mary Kennicott; grew up in what was then West Northfield IL; Illinois' first naturalist, studied Illinois' birds, reptiles and mammals in 1850s; best known for exploring (Russian America( leading to U.S. purchase of Alaska; founded Chicago Academy of Science in 1857 (first museum at Northwestern U.), U. of Michigan Natural History Museum and worked at Smithsonian Institution; died mysteriously on an expedition to the Yukon; explorations made such an impression that today geographic areas and animal species bear his name (eg. Kennecott Mines Co. formed in 1906--misspelling the explorer's name, Kennicott Lake in northwest British Columbia, Kennicott Building at Prairie Crossing Charter School in Grayslake IL); his remains and his parent's remains moved from Wheeling Township Cemetery in Arlington Heights to The Grove in Glenview in 1999
