Veteran WBBM-TV sportscaster Bruce Roberts, died suddenly after suffering an apparent heart attack at his desk in the studio as he was preparing to go on air to interview Chicago Sting player Rudy Glenn. Mr. Roberts, whose legal name is Rogatz, lived on Country Lane in Northbrook. He was 53 years old. A nurse attempted to revive him before Chicago fire Department paramedics arrived to take him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Roberts had been with WBBM since 1949. Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne sent a personal telegram of condolence to his family and the ABC network set aside a two-minute tribute by Howard Cosell during Monday Night Football's Chicago Bears and LosAngeles Rams game. Local radio and television stations paid tribute to Mr. Roberts throughout Monday and Tuesday following his death. Mr. Roberts was an outstanding high school athlete, winning eight letters at South Shore High School in Chicago. He was a member of the track and football teams at the University of Michigan. While in Michigan, he worked as sports director of WHRV in Ann Arbor. During his professional career, he received many awards, including honors from the Illinois Associated Press Editors and the John Hervey Award from Ohio State University.
