Age 72; died at a nursing home in Deerfield IL; native of Aurora; bachelor's degree, cum laude, from U. of Chicago in 1942, Phi Beta Kappa; doctorate from Chicago in 1951, awarded honorary doctor of laws degree from both Illinois Wesleyan U. and Millikin U., honorary doctor of human letters degree from Northwestern on June 15, 1985; rose through academic ranks to become Northwestern U.'s 13th president, served on faculty since 1947, professor of economics since 1958, dean of College of Arts & Sciences four years prior to presidency in July 1970, appointed in 1985 and served five years as chancellor of Northwestern - Date of Publication
