There has beenâ€"a certain amount of business transferred from Halifax to St,â€"Pierre, and St. John‘s Newfoundâ€" land, for what reason it is not quite clea~, omd thesa tv‘o places, which were earlior in the business and used very largely as a basc, then dronned for a while, areâ€"apparently coming back more or less in favor with the rum runner. At the same time what is happening at Halifax is a clear inâ€" dication ‘and nroof that the â€"recent American methods for combating rum running off that coast, is having very definite results, and has practically broken down, at least for the time, the whole trade which operated with this nort as its base. C MANY â€" VESSELS : QUITTING ‘This information was unofficially given out here yesterday, and it was also learncd ‘that a ieast halt the craft which odperated in the rum run« ning game out of Halifax last year are now permanently out of the busiâ€" ness, while at the same time, many of the uncnulurg fishing schooners, at one time engaged in the business, either directly or chartered, have reâ€" cu.ned to ths fighing industry. It is understood. that. there.. is â€";only. one Luncnburg vessel at present under charter in the rum traflic. 3 Shipments Reduced Customs otlcially in Halifax are of the opinion that not half the liquor, Records sof shipping show that at loast half the vessels and steamers that were in the rum running busiâ€" ness last year are out of the game nuirely, so tar as halifax is conâ€" cerned. It has been known for some time that there was a very material decrease in the number of schooners chartered out of Lunonburg. Diverted to Other Uses Records available in Halifax show that on September 1, 1925, there wore eight steamers and eighteen schoonâ€" Strict Regulations _ While in Canada there is no federal prohibition law, the national : governâ€" ment of this country is getting very striect â€"with regard to Canadian vesâ€" sels smuggling into Canada, and there is :a distinct effort to coâ€"operate with American authorities for the enforceâ€" ment : of their law. .For instance Canadian vessels are not .allowed to clear for destinations, with rum carroes. unless they are genuinely destined for such ports as those for which they clear. * The week ending October 16, 3- the first in the history of roum = ning off the United States coast, that there has not been a rum running vesâ€" sel .of some description in halifax harbor. This is attributed directly to the activities ‘of the American rum runner chasers patrolling the Ameriâ€" can coast, says a dispatch from Haliâ€" fax. X Where of late there has not been a rum runner in port for a week at a time, it was not an uncommon thing a year ago to see twenty of them lyâ€" ing in the harbor in one day. > RUM TRADE LOSING : INPORT OF HALIFAX previcusiy shipped through this port, as a base of supplies, is now being sent out of here. t U. 8,.Coast Guard Activities are Making It Poor Business,.
