The lock washer is made of hardened steel with two comparatively sharp projections caused by splitting the washer.<â€" When the nut is turned _ With the wide prevalence of closed car designs one of the most conspicâ€" uous noise factors seems to be conâ€" nected with the doors and windows of such models. These doors are generâ€" ally equipped with rubber. bumpers which are designed to press the door outward against the latch and thereâ€" fore eliminate rattling. These bumpâ€" ers, however, wear out in time and naturally if these. old rubber bumpâ€" ers are not adjusted or new ones put in their places the rattling is apt to be conspicuous. { | When a person buys a‘ new autoâ€" mobile he ought not to‘take too much for granted as to the snugness of nuts and he ought not to condemn the maker of the car too severely if he finds a few of them becoming loose after a few hundred miles run. This is apt to happen ‘in the best it approaches, comes about largely as a result of the care taken of the machine by the owner. â€" s Simple Precautions Any one by taking a few simple precautions â€" can â€" accomplish â€" very definite results in the direction of eliminating noise. Of course, it is logicalâ€" that some of the higher priced machines should in themselves be less susceptible to developing ratâ€" tles of various kinds due to the qualâ€" ity of their construction. For inâ€" stance, as far as‘engine noises are concerned, other things being equal, a ‘four cylinder car would be liable to be noisier than a six or eight cylinder (machine. This tendency would |also prevail concerning rattles of_clgn_uh parts or body parts. I was interested to inquire how this situation was obtained. The answer was that which applies generally unâ€"< der such conditions. The difference beâ€" tween a motor vehicle which runs along with so little Â¥ibration that there is practically no noise and one which can be heard, blocks away as While riding in an automobile reâ€" cently I noticed that the speedomâ€" eter registered over 30,000 miles and the car sped along over the highway making practically no noise. "~ One of the prime factors which nds to rattle proofness in automoâ€" iles is found in the more rigid hassis which manufacturers â€" are uilding into automobiles. Another actor lies in the heavier and larger rankshafts which are to be found n nu? â€" upâ€"toâ€"date models. If he will ive attention occasionally to the arts which most readily develop latters of various kinds he can be ssured of a smooth and silent runâ€" ing machine over a number of years, his attention not only insures elimiâ€" tion of useless noises but at the me time makes for safety in drivâ€" & a car. f | Uucle Sam stands to get someâ€" ing out of Queen Marie‘s visit.
