Speaking of the possibilities of this survey from the Chicago standpoint, Professor Dorau | said: . ;, Vassar, farming was wholly foreign _| to her youthful training, but she liked s |it so well that she completed a sciâ€" _"fentific farming course in the Univerâ€" i | sity of Michigan, ‘and was | selected ‘{to head the American agricultural nÂ¥emerprizcs among the Armenian refâ€" .. ugeés. 6 & "This should throw â€" considerable light upon the future possibilities of home ownership within the area of Chicago proper, and definitely define the economic possibility of the single family dwelling as a type of housing unit in large cities." Special studies of home ownership in the United States, with emphasis on the Chicago sectfbn, is being unâ€" dertaken by the Institute for Reâ€" search in Land Economics and Pubâ€" lic Utilitics of Northwestern Uniâ€" versity. This survey will be an enâ€" deavor to cover the factors and conâ€" ditions which both limit ‘and enâ€" courage home ownership in the citics of the United States. Professor Herbert B. Dorau of the Institute staff has been designated by Dr. Richard T. Ely, director, to superâ€" vise this survey. In Armenia, she found the natives still plowing with the traditional crooked stick, scratching the ground to a depth of two or three inches for reception of seed wheat. The threshâ€" ing process was equally primitive, She worked there two years, teaching the use of modern farming machinâ€" ery, and then was sent back to Ameriâ€" ca to use her experience in the prepâ€" aration of a series of text books.
