HOW THIS IS REMEDIED Geological Survey Explains Inâ€" An artesian well is one which taps a rock formation that contains water under so much hydrostatic pressure that the water is forced up in the well above the normal gmnd-vateri table. In certain areas, called areas of artesian flow, the pressure is sufâ€" ficient to raise the water above the surface and thus to produce flowing artesian wells. In some of the first wells drilled in the l?kotn artesian basin the pressure of the water at the top of the wells was more than 150 pounds to the square inch, and‘ the well at Woonsocket, S. Dak., was reported to have a pressure of 250 pounds to the square inchâ€"about six times the pressure that is obtained from a standpipe a hundred feet high. Tremendous Pressure® Mn.n rells deliver imâ€" P annincs. of tater ty tss ural pressure. For example, the Tinâ€" derry bore, in Australia, at first flowed 2,520 gallons a minute; a well near San Bernardino, Calif., flowed 3,1730 gallons; a well at Chamberlain, S. Dak., flowed 4,350 gallons; and a well near Boswell, N. Mex., flowed 5.710 gallons. The flow of the well near Roswell amounted, in other terms, to about 13 cubic feet a secâ€" ond, or 8 milliog gallons a day. For many years it has been surâ€" mised that large quantities of arteâ€" sian water are lost by leaking underâ€" ground through holes in the corroded casings of the artesian wells. Recentâ€" ly the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, has developed a practical method of locating these leaks and measuring the quantities of water that are wastâ€" ed through them. Hence, an individâ€" ual well owner or a community that depends for its water supply upon arâ€" tesian wells can now obtain definite information as to whether the wells leak, and, if so, how much and at what depth. Simple in Principle The method is very simple in prinâ€" ciple. A current meter that was speâ€" cially constructed for the purpose by | Carl H. Au, of the Geological Survey, | is let down into the well, where itf records the velocity of the water at| any depth desired. With the velocity | and the diameter of the well known,) the rate of flow at any point can be determined. Hence a series of measâ€" urements taken at successive levels from the bottom to the top of the well will show just where the water | enters and in what amounts, where it | leaks out and in what amounts, and how much is delivered at the surface. | For certain investigations it may be | necessary to devise apparatus for measuring the diameter of a well at any depth, but thus far no serious difficulties have arisen on account of ; uncertainty as to the diameter. Successfully Used This method has now been successâ€" city. . In 19 defective wells in Honoluâ€" lu a total underground leakage of 7.150,000 gallons a day was found, which is equal to about oneâ€"third of the total quantity of artesian water consumed from the public waterâ€" works. One of the wells was found to waste 750,000 gallons a day by underâ€" ground leakage. A somewhat expenâ€" sive program of recasing or plugging all leaky artesian wells has been unâ€" dertaken, and the value of the work already completed is indicated by the fact that leakage amounting to 5,900,â€" 000 gallons a day has been effectively stopped. The experience on this proâ€" ject has shown that recasing and plugging leaky wells are difficult and expensive operations, which require the instructions of a competent hyâ€" draulic engineer. _ â€" _ Th fully Honolulu, an« sian basin. in Mexico.
