SEES PROSPERITY IF HOOVER ELECTED Locomotive Magnate Makes Sigâ€" | nificant Statement; Thinks _ | Country On Eve of Big | Advancement I VAUCLAIN BACKS G. 0. P A pledge to gather for the Repubâ€" lican national ticket all the support he could muster was voiced by Samâ€" uel M. Vauciain, president of the Baldâ€" win Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, almost simultaneouly with the nomâ€" ination of Alfred E. Smith, Governor of New York, as Democratic candiâ€" date for the Presidency. Mr. Vauâ€" clain‘s announcement is regarded in political and manufacturing circles as significant. Mr. Vauciain‘s announcement made it plain that he regards Herbert Hooâ€" ver as the leader who is best able to lead the Nation to its greatest peak of prosperity, which, heâ€" declared, would not be at the expense of workâ€" ers‘ wages. His announcement folâ€" lowed an address on the occasion of the removal of the Baldwin Locomoâ€" tive Works for Philadelphia to Eddyâ€" stone. Mr. Vauclain expressed himself unâ€" qualifiedly for the election of Mr.‘ Hoover as the "the man needed by America‘s industries." He declared he would "fight for him and try to command all.the suppbrt I can gather for his candidacy." ‘ Davis Boosts Hoover _ That. a strong man such as Mr. Hoover is needed to bring the counâ€" try out of its temporary business slough was the expression of several speakers, including James J. Davis, Secretary of Labor, who, however, said he did not think the occasion the right one to make a political speech. For the accommodation of married graduate students at Harvard uniâ€" versity, the Harvard Housing Trust is erecting a building at Holden Green, Cambridge. Provision will be made for 22 apartments and 1 small house. "Rents will be from $39 to 59, and ocâ€" eupancy is promised by September 15. "We have been passing through a slight temporary depression, we might as well admit, but we are almost out of it now." Mr. Vauclain said. "We are looking forward to greater prosâ€" perity for industry will not be at the expense of workers‘ wages. We have reached more scientific ways of cutâ€" ting down costs than by prtuning pay envelopes. Increased production along the most modern lines is our watchâ€" word. Cheap labor abroad does not bother us. and whatever we attemp we will carry out by procecding along the policy of the ‘Golden Rule." Unâ€" the following June 30th. The law licensing poultry dealers in the state was backed by leading agriculturalists and farm papers. The principal object sought is the protecâ€" tion of the poultry raiser, in that unâ€" der the provisions of the law dealers must secure licenses and are required to keep an accurate record which will make possible the tracing of all purâ€" chases. Records are open to the inâ€" speetion of all peace officers and in numberless instances have proven valâ€" uable in the tracing of chicken thieves. Better Protection Afforded ‘ During the year the law has been on the statute books of the state there. have been numerous arrests and conâ€" victions as a result of the information contained in the dealers records. The law and its enforcement by local ofâ€" ficers, aided by representatives of the various protective organizations, is causing lllinois to become a much less profitable field for the operation of chicken thieves. It is estimated many thousands of dollars have been saved to the chicken raisers of the state as a result of the measure, while still greater benefits will acâ€" cure as petty thieves learn the plyâ€" ing of their eraft will bring quick deâ€" tection and prompt punishment. In the variety of the weather bureau‘s world wide observations, records are being broken somewhere all the time. The unusual thing is the normal thing.
