MUSIC FESTNIVAL Opening of 21st Annual Concert Series, Northwestern Gymâ€" nasium, on May 27 With the 21st Chicago North Shore Music Festival scheduled to open one month from Monday night, May 27th at Northwestern university gymnasâ€" iunm, comes the thought that few American communities have had 21 consecutive music festivitiee of any kind, and:â€"none that presented from vear to â€"year programs of chorus, orchestra and solists of higher standâ€" ard than those which these festivals have provided. = It is the festival character of the programs wm'}izas lifted them into prominence â€" and made the North Shore Festival association rank as one of the three or four leading muâ€" sical organizations of this character in America. With another. notable roster of world famous artists and a program unexcelled for interest and variety this year‘s festival promises to â€"probably eclipse_all past festivals. fastivals Opening Concert The work chosen for the opening concert, the night of May 27th, is Saint Saens‘ Samson and Delilah Cyrena., Van Gordon Edith Mason whichâ€"enjoys the unugual distinction of being equally popular as an operâ€" atic and as a concert performance. In it will be heard a trio of distinguished artists who already have achieved triumphs in the same roles when singâ€" ing with <the Chicago Civic Opera company. They are Cyrena Van Gorâ€" don, contralto, Charles Marshall, tenâ€" or, and Richard Bonelli, . baritone. Herbert Gould also has an important part. â€"Inâ€"addition, the magnificent festival chorus of 600 voices, the A Cappella choir and the Chicago Symâ€" phony orchestra will have parts in the presentation of the brilliant muâ€" sic which scintillates with the genius andâ€"dramatic ability of the composer. In the second concert a great new voice Will be heard for the first time in the West when Gina Pinnera, soâ€" prano, appears.. Efrem Zimbalist, master ofâ€" violin, also is scheduled for this performance. yies Notable Array â€" At the third concert another notable array ofâ€"soloists, the festival chorus;, the A CappeHaâ€"choir, and the Chiâ€" cago Symphony Orchestra will be est choral work ever composed. The great pianist, Josef Hofmann, will also appear as a soloâ€" ist on this program.~ = The fourth concert will be a maâ€" tinee on Saturday at which a chilâ€" dren‘s chorus of 1500 voices will sing accompanied by the Chicago Symâ€" phony Orchestra, and soloists new to north shore will be heard including Alice Mock, soprano; Barreâ€"Hill, bariâ€" tone. . The fifth and concluding concert offers as soloists the opera favorite, Edith Mason, soprano; Richard Bonâ€" elli, baritone and Arne Oldberg, pianâ€" ist and concludes with the Coronation scene from Boris Godounovy with its imposing sonorities which will bring the festival to a close in waves of glorious sound. s l The addition of three more memâ€"| bers to the board of supervisors will | make it possible to split some of the | cumbersome committees into three‘ new ones, it was learned last week Committee Changes on Supervisor Board following a session of several memâ€" bers of the board. § committee unit. The rightâ€"ofâ€"ways will be. taken from the fees and salaries commitâ€" tees, the Erroneous Assessments will be taken from the committee on elecâ€" tions and juries, and the resolutions This will give plenty of committees to divide among the 37 members for Supervisor James O‘Connor, who is chairman, and will allow the men to go into matters more thoroughly. Judd, manager. of the Waukeâ€" gan offices of Telephone company, is quoted as reporting that the growth in the number of telephones in Wauâ€" kegan is near the mark of 10,000. Waukegan Telephone _ System to Have Two â€"~ _â€" _ Switchboard Prefixes â€"In line with this marked ‘developâ€" ment of service of ‘the company in Waukegan it will soon be necessary to add another switchboard system to the Waukegan offices, and place both switchboards under a separate operâ€" ating unit each to carry â€"a prefix which will be added to the telephone numbers, says the Waukegan Sun. The . operating limits of one switch; board is placed at 10,500. â€" When the number of phones exceeds this figure it is necessary to add a second board in order to avoid confusion.
