LINE CARS ARE PUT IN SERVICE Twentyâ€"Five Steel Passenger Coaches in Use; Many New Improvements o Thursday, March 20, 1930 Twentyâ€"five new passenger cars, representing the ht_es!_: creation in upâ€" toâ€"date steel car design and involyâ€" ing a cost of nearly a million dolâ€" lars were placed in service Saturday morning by the North Shore line. They will be used on the Skokie Valâ€" ley route, between Chicago and Milâ€" waukee. Last Friday morning at 10 o‘clock a five car train of the new cars, which far outstrip in comfort and safety features even the latest equipâ€" ment now in use, was sideâ€"tracked at the Edison Court station. Britâ€" ton I. Budd, president of the road, B. J. Fallon, C. E. Thompson, L. M. Lyâ€" tle, and W. V. Griffin, vice presidents, John Blackhall, general manager, and John J. Moran, commercial manager, were on board to receive Waukegan business men for an inspection tour of the train. From 12 o‘clock noon until 9 o‘clock Friday night the train was open for public inspection. â€" Officials of the railâ€" road conducted interested persons through the cars, demonstrating the new items of .comfort and modern coachmaking which they embody. The spring suspension of the cars has been greatly improved, giving added ease of riding. Motor control has been redesigned to give faster acâ€" celeration and deceleration, and air brake equipment is of the latest type. State May Help Pave Route in Waukegan The state highway department last week advised the county board of supervisors that it had under conâ€" sideration the matter of paving and widening Route 42 (Sheridan road) in the city of Waukegan. The city and county asked that the state stand a porportionate share of this cost on the improving of the strip cut through connecting the route on the south side of the new culvert as it was largely used by foreign traffic from Chicago. The board of supervisors also was informed from the state highway deâ€" partment that funds had been set aside for the improving of a road known as Route 60 that will enter Illinois near Richmond and go south through the lake ‘regions and into Lake Zurich from where it will conâ€" nect with Chicago. Supervisor Emil Ficke had been interested in gaining this roadway.
