He was past commander of the Naval and Military Order of Spanishâ€"American war and member of the Society of the Army at Santiago, He served in the First ‘(now the 131st) Illinois inâ€" fantry for 11 years before the World war and during the war was a leader in all patriotic and civic movements here. He was a lawyer by proféssion and a very successful one . Services Appreciated In Highland Park Mr. Cheney‘s many fine qualities and remarkable ability were fully appreciated by those who knew him best. He was unassuming and lacked any approach to ostentation and it is probable that by citizens in general his splendid talents and valuable services to his community were not fully realized, because many of the finest things credited to him were accomplished in the spirit described by the biblical inâ€" junction, "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth." Â¥ As a city commissioner for eight years and in other positions of trust and honor in Highland Park Mr. Cheney fulfilled his duties faithfully and efficiently, and his brilliant career in the public life of the city alone enâ€" titles him to a high place in Highland Park annals. Widow Survives _ He is survived by his widow, who was formerly Miss Rose Fleet, who he married five years ago. There are no children. \ The news of the death of Mr. Cheâ€" ney spread rapidly â€"throughout the city yesterday and was received with many expressions of sincere sorrow and appreciation of his fine service to the city and to the several organizaâ€" tions of which from time to time he was an horored leader. The widow has the profound sympathy of the entire community in her great loss. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.
