Over 50 Miles of New Roads Paved Weekly in Illinois, State Record Well over 50 miles of new roads are being paved each week by the state of Illinois, according to n reâ€" port by the department of construcâ€" tion. During the six working days that the last réport covers, a total of 54.63 miles of state bond issue and state aid roads were constructed. Of this addition to the highway mileage of the state, 52.46 miles were paved, bringing the total for the season up to 535.99 miles of pavement. The state forces graveled 2.17 miles of highway during the week and 9.53 miles this year. The compilation of the road conâ€" struction for the week, prepared by C. M. Hathaway, engineer of conâ€" struction, shows that 80 concrete mixers were in operation, Of these 68 were at work on state bond issue routes, in all of the nine districts of the state. State aid roads, under the direction of the division of highways, were adâ€" vanced 9.65 miles during the week, bringing the total 1930 mileage in this branch of road construction up to 118.87 miles. Fort Sheridan officials last week denied reports emanating from Chiâ€" cago, that Corporal Thomas McArâ€" rian, army deserter, had confessed to Chicago police that he had stolen an army machine gun and 18,000 rounds of ammunition, and ‘had sold them to "Cicero gangsters." McAdrian, _ who _ deserted _ two months â€" ago, was captured three weeks ago, Captain Walter McCord, army officer investigating the theft of the machine gun, said today, and has been held in the post guardâ€" house for the past three weeks. "He has no connection with the stolen machine gun," McCord said. The report places the number of men directly employed at road conâ€" struction work during the week at 12,000.
