Thursday, October 16, 1930 PLAN TO EXTEND SCOUT ACTIVITY the Highland Park district Boy Scout committee, in an interview yesterday thus explained the purpose of the meeting: "This meeting was held to ~lay plans for future activities. Plans for enlarging accommodations at Camp Makajawan to take care of a greater number of boys in the future, organâ€" ization of Cub packs for boys from 9 to 11 years and securing of a tract for a nearby camp where troops can hike and spend the night were proâ€" posed. The proposition to put on a campaign to raise funds necessary for carrying on the work of the Boy Scout movement here for the next two years was started, and the drive probably will begin in January. A fine report was made by Executive Myron Rybolt of the year‘s work of the area, showing how scouting is progressing by leaps and bounds and the fine results it is exhibiting effect it is having on the boys who are so fortunate as to be scouts." Several Talks Three minute talks were made by Jimmy Olin, a Cub in Pack 60 of Kenilworth, Judson Wells a Boy Scout of Troop 33, Highland Park and Gorâ€" don Cutler a Sea Scout in Ship No. 29 of Kenilworth. A large increase in Boy Scout enrollâ€" ment is also anticipated for the year. RAVINIA WOMAN‘S CLUB HEARS AUTHOR fraught with meaning, but rather the idea .implied between the lines, just as in our daily contacts we have learned that the spoken word may not always be interpreted literally. For multiple examples of these trends in modern literature, she quoted many living authors. (Continued from page 4) (Continued from page 5) ’ Upon entering that attractive buildâ€" her |ing especially delightful in its artistle ned | decorations of autumn leaves and der|flowers, one immediately felt an atâ€" illy | mosphere of real sociability, which are|could not fail to make this occasion in |serve its purpose, that of promoting of \a wider and more intimate acquaintâ€" yet | anceship among the many people who yig. | were gathered there. Miss Gale read three of her storâ€" ies, all depicting simple people in humble surroundings, tellingly told, with infinite humaness, and yet deâ€" void of cloying sentimentality, Dickâ€" ens‘ Little Nell could scarce draw readier tears, nor more copious ones. Her rare humility places her among the truly gifted. The profound silence which obtained throughout the discourse was indicaâ€" tive of the rapt interest of the audiâ€" ence. Luncheon Meeting The organization opened its winâ€" ter activities with a luncheon meetâ€" ing, a feature inaugurated last year, and one which has proven quite pleasâ€" ant to the members, more than half of whom attended. _ Their number was later augumented by many who came for Miss Gales‘ lecture. Many guests were noted. In passing, let it be said that visitors are always welcome to "listen in" at our monthâ€" ly programs. West Ridge Community Club Opens Activities An informal reception on Friday evening, October 10, marked the beâ€" ginning of the year‘s social program arranged by the. West Ridge Comâ€" munity club. For years this has been a most active club, bringing to memâ€" bers and friends many social and eduâ€" cational evenings, and making Ridge school a real community center for that part of Highland Park. The guests of honor last Friday evening were Mayor Lewis and memâ€" bers of the city council, members of the board of education of District 108, Rev. and Mrs. Frank Fitt, Rev. and Mrs. Piepenbrok of Deerfield, Supt. and Mrs. C. G. Wright, together with different teachers who are engaged in the work at Ridge school. After the president of the club, F. L. Griffith, had extended the guests a .cordial welcome, the program was turned over to Mr. E. Peterson who, as master of ceremonies, introduced the various gucsts along with Mayor Lewis and Mr. C. M. Vail, president of the board of education. â€" Both genâ€" tlemen responded with short talks, giving brief bits of information con» cerning the rapid development of the school district as well as the city. Many present were delighted when it was announced that William Quentâ€" meyer of Chicago, an old favorite at West Ridge, would entertain them with several vocal numbers. Mr. Quentmeyer‘s voice was in its usual good form and, accompanied by .Mrs. Irma Nixon, greatly pleased his audiâ€" ence The ladies of the club with their usual charming hospitality, served dainty refreshments, thus bringing to a close a most delightful evening with promises of many more equally pleasing to follow.â€"Contributed.
