P. 4260 CHAIR COVERS THE PRESS DISCUSS PLANS FOR NEW N. S. HIGHWAY Need of Through Road from Chi. cago to Wisconsin Line Urged; Details Plans are being discussed tor a new highway which would give resi- dents of north shore suburbs as far as Highland Park a new access to Chicago and help to relieve the traf- he strain on Sheridan road, which yearly grows more accute. This high- way, roughly. would parallel the west side of the Chicuo and North Welt- ern railwartraeks Ind connect with McCormick boulevard at Evanston, While the plans now for tt com- pleted highway are in a nebuious stage, it is pointed out by highway While the plans now for a com- pleted highway are in a nebulous stage, it is pointed out by highway experts that in the years to come such a thoroughfare will have to be opened to traffie to relieve north shore con- nation. In most of the north shore suburbs interested section: of this potrutiul highway Ire now in use. Wont Uniiied System Now planners of the Chicuo div. trict road system are urging the con- necting of the various completed lec- tionn into a unified arterial highway. Possibly one name could be given to the road, which has several appella~ tions in the various towns. Sugges- tions are that some Indian Chieftain who roamed the north shore in the early days of Chicago might huve his name commemorated or honor l mizht be done to a hero of the civil :or world war. Taking I look over this potential thoroughfare, a start is made in Ev. anston at the point where McCormick boulevard runs into West railroad av- enue. West Railroad avenue is I 50- fout street, which was completed this year. It runs to Wilmette. v Chen-u Name Aosin West Railroad avenue becomes Main street in Wilmette. It is n re- n-ntly completed street about the same width as the section in Evans- ton and it tuna to Elmwood avenue --tt few blocks south of the city lim- its. The avenue is now being paved n A 56-foot highway, and it is hoped that construction will be completed before the winter cold sets in. This section crosses the town from the south boundary to the north. _ Coming to the Winnetka line a cap is found which extends north for ithree " four blocks to Winnetka ev- enue. Then Center street pick: up the burden of the future highwoy. This Winnetka section is M-feet wide, Aeinst three or four years old. Then ithere is a gap on Center from Elm 1utreet to Tower road - or Hubbard Woods.. limits there is no new plvament, but special assessment proceedings no now under way in court with a view to finishing it through the length of the town. Right-of-way Sought The village of Winnetka is now negotiating with the Chicago and North Western for a strip of land along its right of wsy, and there are proceedings in court to pave. From Tower road there is a good pavement running through Hubbard Woods to the south line of Glencoe. Reaching Glencoe, an uncertain alt- uation is found. For the last seven or eight years there has been consid- erable controversy in the town " to what route a road improvement which would link up with other suburbs should take. Further, the matter of expense has proved an obstacle. Green Bay road goes directly to Highland Park, where connections may be made with highways which extend on the north or northwest through Lake county and on to the resorts of Wisconsin. Chicago Spring Flower Show in Merchandise Mart March 21 to 27 The 1931 spring flower show to be held March 21 to 27 in the vast exhibi- tion halls of the Merchandise Mutt. will.be the first show to be financed and managed wholly by the gun-den clubs, through their state federation known as the Garden Clubs of Illinois. There are 97 clubs in the federation, most of them in the vicinity of Chi- cago. Mrs. William L. Knrcher of Freeport, Ill., is president. John A. Commit- tees of garden club members will have charge of all deuils of the show promotion and installation. Space available in the Merchandise Mart is Inger thnn tint much in my previous show; and its arrangement is more convenient, placing all ex- hibits on one floor. An important feature of the show will be tt display of cut flowers, and pot plants. which will include every variety of flower and plant grown in the Chieago ore- and will be ar- ranged to make the entire show a spectacle of beauty. Garden clubs ore alrendy " work on show preparations. As soon " the holidays are over, intensive work or: exhibits will begin, and for the remainder of winter, until the Brat outdoor flowers appear, indeed, gard- ens and flowers will monopolize at- tention in suburban chclos.
