Three cases were from Macoupin and two from Effingham counties. "This is the highest prevalence of tularemia that has ever been observed in Illinois," the department said. "Inâ€" fected rabbits are the most common source. The large number of cases recently reported is therefore taken as an indication â€" that rabbits are heavily infected this year." Tularemia is rarely fatal but is a long drawnâ€"outâ€"disease. Infection is through scratches, cuts, or abrasions of the skin.
