PAGE TWELVE Synopsis of Lecture on Christian Science Given Friday Evening A large audience gathered at the Elm Places chool Friday evening to hear a lecture on Christian Science By William Wallace Porter, C.&B., of New York City. Mr. Porter is a member of the Board of Lectureship of the mwa,m First Church of Scientist, in Bosâ€" tou, Mass. Folowing is a short reâ€" view of the lecture. In order that Christian Science may be of value to humanity it must do something or bring someâ€" thing to humanity in a compensatâ€" ing and appreciable way.‘ Christian Science demonstrates the proposition that health, peace, harmony, and prosperity are the natural concomitants of Life, Mind, or God, which belong to all alike. ‘These desriable and welcome states are not the result of chance nor of a supernatural impulsion. . They are the natural fruitage, unfoldment, or scientific translation of the diâ€" vine Mind, or God, to the human understanding. 5e w1 assumption that existence is conâ€" trolled by cireumstance and chance; and that the only escape from this must be found through the hypnotic channels of matter medicine and the belief in supernatural theories of religion. _ _ \ 7 . Human thought seems to have lost sight of ï¬o essential fact that ereation or implies order and harmony; and it has gccepted instead the theory of discord and chance.. This comes from trying to carry an uncertain material sense of things into the realm of the creaâ€" tive Mind, and then assuming that this creative Mind, or God, is the cause of these discordant mortal concepts. This is as reasonable as to try to make the fundamental law of numbers the author all matheâ€" matical errors. _ This procedure builds up a false sense of the creaâ€" tive Mind, or God, which involves limitation, materiality, and uncer~ tainty in Deity. Starting from this false sense of the creative Mind, or God, it is impossible to see man and the universe otherwise than as subâ€" jett to the caprice of chance and to the expectancy of evil.~ _ . True Identity and Individuality The question arises; Whence comes the true identity and indvidâ€", uality of all things? It is perfectly clear that these are not selfâ€"creaâ€" tions. They do, however, point to an intelligent creative cause, origin, or God. The true identity and inâ€" dividuality of persons and things are truly known only as the divine Mind, or God, unfolds in the underâ€" standing the idea which brings them into view. From this it is seen that all identity "and individuality thus defined, classified, and individâ€" ualize exist, primarily, not as maâ€" terial objects or physical models, but as idea; and that, as ideas, they exist forever in the realm of underâ€" standing. They never become maâ€" terial phenomena; nor do material, mortal phenomena ever appear, as such, in the realm of understanding. Material phenomena are transâ€" ient; hence they have not the subâ€" stance of reality. â€" Spiritual ideas are eternal, like the origin, or Mind, which they reflect; hence they are substantial and real. It must be apparent, then, that where the spirâ€" itual or true idea appears,â€"defined Too long has human thought KÂ¥ou can have concrete foors That concrete foors are best no one doubts! But the cost? That problem has at last been solved. Preâ€"cast joists bring the cost of .mmaon.?:a. comparable with ordinary comâ€" demand within reach of all. Referring to his eternal identity Jesus said, "And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was;" and again, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abrsham was, I am." Pointing to this same unchanging identity Paul wrote, "Your life is hid with Christ in God." Whilst Mrs. Eddy has (penned these enlightening words, ".â€". . the intelligence, existence, and continâ€" uity of all individuality remain in God, who is the divinely creative Principle thereof" (Science and Health, p. 513). Because the true identity and inâ€" dividuality ofâ€"all things reflects the perfect Mind, or Life, which is God, it can never depart from this perfecâ€" tion. It can never be sick, nor is it rf; it is not discouraged, nor is a failure; nor can it ever express any of these limitations. The unâ€" derstanding and demonstration of this true identity and individuality is the way of salvation for men â€" the appreciable way of ascending thought. “7 holdng thought consistently to the #»:1 w tnt â€" tha evant solve mathematical problems with unfailing certainty. The recogniâ€" tion is mdly coming to this age that by ing thought consistently and exactly to the rules laid down in Christian Science, one may exâ€" pect to experience with equal cerâ€" tainty the solution of those human problems which present themselves in the form of ill health, danger, grief, and lack of supply or poor business. "Prayer and Authority" The desire to emerge from the deadening routine of material, morâ€" tal heredity and tradition is true prayer, irresistible in its nature and power. â€"Moreover, it must be seen also that this pure desire, orâ€"prayer, does not perpetuate, but, on the conâ€" trary, dispels those dogmatic beliefs and traditions which hamper the translation of thought. Otherwise prayer and progress would be anâ€" tagonistic the one to the other; and human existence would show no greater objective than the revolving wheel in a squirrel cage. In response to insistent pure deâ€" sire, or prayer, the spiritual or true idea of Life, Mind, or God,â€" unfolds to the understanding the nature of man‘s true being. In this transfigâ€" uration the sick are healed and the erring are restored to useful lives. Here one finds the answer to his question: Why try to work out of mortal mind which does not exist? Through the healing of his sickness, his sin, and his suffering one learns that these are neither real nor neâ€" cessary. He has now entered a higher state of consciousness in which he looks with great expecâ€" tancy and certainty to the experiâ€" ence of health and prosperity. ~The purpose of religion and prayer is not to force upon thought the acceptance of an assumed auâ€" thority, but to establish the recogniâ€" tion of supreme authority or Prinâ€" ciple, which operates in a compenâ€" sating way with respect to the good or salvation of the individual. Christ Jesus We are told in the Bible that Jesus spoke as one having authority. The words of Jesus were not the words of one who merely assumed a role of authority. Nor did he speak as one who had been inâ€" Toe detailed information on the Paste this cou structed merely _ say certain words. louv&n“dm things, clearly, And this clear inâ€" sight he expressed with the convieâ€" ::-ehï¬pud “:'a‘xldh worl esug exâ€" mt’hdnlplidtyal-n-tld- ence. Ignorance, human belief, and suâ€" perstition do not readily make way for the advancing idea of Truth, or God. But this unfoldment of God â€"the advance of a higher underâ€" standing brought by Jesusâ€"was inâ€" evitable, as witness the words of Jesus in John 7:16, 17, 18: . "Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. : 3 hmb â€""If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of "He that speaketh of seeketh his own glory: but he seeketh his glory that sent him, same is true, and no unrighteousâ€" ness is in him." Discovery and Discoverer From the time of her early interâ€" mittent writings, in 1862, on through the year 1866,â€"which year marks the first steps of Mrs. lz) healing, a healing shortly thereafter brought to a full and happy compleâ€" tion.â€"on throuch successive stages a4â€" Adomaneteatinn _ Mire Rirc ns constantly enlarging her experience, understanding, and spirituality, Let no one think for s moment that Christian Science, as it is known toâ€" day, wasunfolded in a brief hour, or in a quickly passing year. The slow years coming and going found Mrs. Eddy faithfully pursuing a a goal which was always kept foreâ€" most in her thoughtâ€"this goal beâ€" ing a comprehensive undestanding of God, and the practical value of this understanding in its applieation to the healing of humanity‘s sins, sufferings, and sorrows. It would require a sturdy chapter of itself to tell of the patient steps, taken one by one, to find the basis of Christian Science, and to perfect this Science, as it is toâ€"day.
