Memorial Tribute To Ravinia Woman‘s Club First President As Lettie Wagner, a young enâ€" thusiastic kindergartner, she came to Chicago, away back in the eightâ€" ies, to join her brother. Later she became a resident of the old Eim St. Settlement, which afterward beâ€" came the ‘Eli Bates Settlement, where she did secretarial and kinderâ€" garten work. s Mrs. Buck recently passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. ‘Orrin McCorison in Chappagua, N. Y. She was born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, in the year 1867. It was there she met the brilliant young artist and architect, Lawrence Buck. Their slogan was to meet all obstacles cheerfully, and obstacles there were in plenty, but the slogan became a working principle in their lives and remained so to the end. In about 1909 when their only child, Virginia, was a little girl, they moved to Ravinia, and after built their home on Marshman Ave. It was Mrs. Buck who first conâ€" ceived the idea of forming a womâ€" an‘s club. ‘The story can best be told by quoting from a paper which she wrote for the club in 1924: "To tell you anything about the beginâ€" ning of the Woman‘s Civie Club of Ravinia, it is necessary, first of all, to tell you sqmething of what Raâ€" vinia ‘wasâ€"way back in 1911.. We did all thisâ€"and after several months work in cireulating petiâ€" tions for the issue of school bonds which called for an_ election, we succeeded; the bond issue was carâ€" riedâ€"in spite of the fact that womâ€" en did mcmmmam-m the morning of the e on our last little stunt was to have a printed dodger which was put into every morning paper at the station, three or four of us going very early to eatch the early birds. These noâ€" tices were given to every voter tellâ€" ing him not to forget the election and HOW TO VOTE on the bond issue. "We were on hand with carriages to take the men to the polling place. There .were no automobiles in Raâ€" vinia in those muddy days! We were even noticed by the Chicago Tribune. They said our efforts equalled those of the first ward poliâ€" ticians, and that Hinky Dink might get some pointers from us how to carry on an electionâ€"and not vote!" This dauntless group were also busy in â€"many other ways, their greatest achievement being the edâ€" ucational fund which amounted to about a thousand dollars a year for period of three years. This fund was used to augment the salaries of the teachers over and above what they were paid by the school board, and for special studies not in the curriculum. A club with a background such as this may well be proud of their first president. ~Letty Buck was a tiny little person with a mighty strength of spirit and her smile will never be forgotten by those whose privilege it was to call her friend.
