Elliott Humphrey Will Speak Tuesday on "Seeing Eye" (Continued fm?ggn!) wide open spaces and glamour of ranch life. He worked during a vacation in this glorious west and in the short time he was there, his future was shaped. _ _ _ â€"_ When sehool behind him, he packed his bolo:l‘&: and set out in the direction of this inner urge,â€" the plains. You see him punching cows, roping walves, rounding: up cattle, roping horses, hunting buffalo and mountain cats. . As a great horseman he rode in rodeos, and broke outlaw horses in the stockâ€" yards and during the war for our government. He rode three times in the U. 8. Army 300 mile endurance test and won that contest once. ‘The training of animals, wild and tame, always held a great satisfacâ€" tion for him. He liked to know what could be done with them, and how it could be accomplished for the utility or amusement of man,. No wonder, therefore, that he sought out the great circus act owner of his day, "Diamond Bill Hall! and put on wild animal acts for him. ‘To.those who have been only inâ€" terested spectators at a circus, this sounds like a thrilling kind of life to lead, but Jack Humphrey wanted moreâ€"thanâ€"this.â€"Hoâ€"had the ability he wanted to know "the hows and whys." In spite of his busy daily life in the practical field, he found time for scientific study in theory. His keen observation showed itseif in a laboratory experiment with fruit flles at the university where he took a special course in genetics. He found what he thought to be an impurity in the stock used and after leaving his reports, others working on the problem discovered the "imâ€" purity" to be due to a new gene, which had hitherto been unknown. His studies, however, did not satisfy his insatiable appetite for knowlâ€" edge and he decided to do some work himself. Before long he had comâ€" pleted the most exhaustive study of German Shepherd dog blood lines ever attempted, and earned recogniâ€" tion as a "practical" geneticist and psychologist. Mrs. m started the Fortunate Fields project, a study in breeding the German Shepherd for higher intelligence in the field of actual, not theoretical service. Beâ€" cause of her ability to recognize poâ€" tential values, it was Jack Humphâ€" rey whom she chose to assist her in this work, for she realized that here was a man whose knowledge of breeding, not only theoretical, but practical, was so broad as to insure the success of her project. The reâ€" sult of this experiment was set down in "Working Dogs" of which Elliott 8. Humphrey is coâ€"author with Dr. i Lucien Warner (Johns Hopkins Press). Club station at Avon, N. Y. To When the Seeing Eye came into existence, its fosterâ€"mother, Fortuâ€" nate Fields realized that Jack Humphrey was the only ome who, well grounded in practice and theory, knew animais and man well enough to direct the training and research division. Thus did bis changing background lead Jack Humphrey surely and steadily to the work which, so far as is known, no one else could do so well. self.
