Students See Flags of American History stirring patriotic address that they will not soon forget. Beginning with a short eulogy to the Great Emancipator, Mrs. Phelps spent the remainder of her time describing and displaying the many flags, 18 in all, which had flown over these United States, a nation that owes its unity largely to his steady hand and unswerving purpose of saving the Union. As Mrs. Phelps recounted the hisâ€" toric significance of each flag, two high school girls unfurled before their audience one of the 18 replicas made by the North Shore Chapter after untiring and careful research had assured them of its authentic design. â€" t Mrs. E. R. Phelps, past president of the North Shore chapter of the D.A.R., presented to Highland Parks 1200 high school students in their Lincoln asssembly last Friday a ‘The flags described and displayed by Mrs. Phelps were as follows: The flags, of Columbus‘ voyage to the new continent â€" the royal flag of Ferdinand and Isabella and the flag of Spain; the French Fleur Dekgs ef~1034â€"â€"carriedrinte~Iltincis > by 141 Salle, Marquette, and Joliet in 1795, probably the pennant that once graced the shores of Lake Michigan near Highland Park; the English Cross of St. George carried into the St. Lawrence by Cabot in 1493; the Scottish Cross of St. Andrew of 1603; the English King‘s Colors of the Colonies at Plymouth and Jamesâ€" town; the British Isles flag of Eng. land, Ireland, Scotland and Wales (1607 â€" 1802); the rare Concord (Massachusetts) banner raised by the "embattled farmers" who "fired the shot heard round the world." The famous Colonial flag of the White Pine (1775â€"1776); the Continâ€" ental and Pine in a Red Field (1775); the Bunker Hill flag which combined the English St. George‘s Cross and the Continental Pine in a Blue Field; the Crescent flag that unfurled over Fort Moultrie; the Gadsden or North Carolina Snake flag of John Paul Jones (1776). ~The first flag to suggest the ultiâ€" mate banner of these United States was the Cambridey of George Washâ€" ington‘s troops which combined the King‘s Colors of England with seven red and six white bars to represent the thirteen colonies. On July 14, 1777 came the Betsy Ross flag with its thirteen stars arranged in a cirâ€" cle, within a field of blue, and with its thirteen barsâ€"the first flag of the new United States of America. The "Star Spangled Banner" of Francis Scott Key with its 15 stars and 15 bars was altered by Congress‘ onder in July 1818 when it was deâ€" cided to add a star for each new state and to have but thirteen bars to represent the original colonies. Mrs. Phelps, after paying homâ€" age to Key whose national anthem had been sung to open the program, presented the Confederate flag, "the Stars and Bars," and closed by leadâ€" ing the entire student body in the Pledge of Allegiance to the present flag of the fortyâ€"eight United States of America. â€" The high school is indeed deeply grateful to: Mrs. Phelps and the North Shore Chapter of D.A.R. for such an appropriate Lincoln assemâ€" bly.
