.A national drive to sweep the American automobile industry and stimulate American business generâ€" ally was announced here today by Alvin Macauley, speaking for every American automobile manufacturer and the nation‘s 46,000 automobile dealers. Automobile Industry National Drive As Business Stimulant ‘The campaign, to be known as "National Used Car Exchange Week," and scheduled for MARCH 5 to 12, is an outgrowth of recent conferences at the White House beâ€" tween President Roosevelt and leadâ€" ers of the automobile industry, Mr. Macauley said. The President has been advised of plans for the camâ€" paign, which is the first cooperative <ffort ever undertaken in which all American automobile manufacturâ€" ers have taken part. 7 The campaign is timed at the outâ€" set of the spring selling season when both new and used cars usuâ€" ally begin to move in greatest volâ€" THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 1988 ume, Mr. Macauley said. It is aimâ€" ed primarily at stimulating the disâ€" posal of used car stocks now in dealer hands, Once this is accomâ€" plished, a substantial increase in car manufacturing schedules and employment of wage earners in the automobile factories is anticipated. The primary purpose of the camâ€" paign, he said, is to make known to prospective owners the remarkâ€" able used car values which now are being offered by automobile dealâ€" ers in all parts of the United States. "The present situation has resultâ€" ed in the best used car values in the country‘s history. We are confiâ€" dent that used car stocks will be reduced sharply as soon as the pubâ€" lic becomes aware of that fact," he added. During the last few years vast improvements have been made in motor cars and this improved transâ€" portatioin is available on easy terms to those who take advantage of the bargains to be offered during "National Used Car Exchange Week," Mr. Macauley stated. "Too many unsafe, wornout, unâ€" reliable cars, without modern safety brakes, safety glass, large tires and steel bodies, are in operation toâ€" day," he continued. "Too many are costly to operate. Eleven million cars seven years old or older are licensed for operation throughout the country. "Many of these cars can be reâ€" placed during Nationalâ€"Used Car Exchange Weekâ€"toâ€" the great adâ€" vantage of the buyer and of the publicâ€"with _ newer, ‘upitoâ€"date‘ cars, without initial investment beâ€" yond their present car and on terms to suit ?e average pocketbook. These used cars offer modern equipâ€" ment and are a good investment in comfort, safety and‘ economy.‘ Prof. Clark Kuebler To Speak Before Catholic League The regular monthly meeting of the North Shore Catholic Woman‘s League will be held on Tuesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at the Communâ€" ity House in Winnetka.
