The following tribute was sent to Mrs. Hodges by a friend, in recog- nition of her 90th birthday two years ago: Shall I tell you what your birth- day means to all of us who know you? Just thir- She came to Chicago, a bride of Carl Hodges, who was the owner of Halladay House, now the LaVerne Hotel, " East Michigan Avenue, Chicago. They had one daughter, the late Alice Balladay Buckley, who died a number of years ago. Both mother and daughter were noted for their beauty. Funeral services were held at the Kelley Chapel, 27 North Sheridan Road, at 2:30 o'clock Thursday ulter- noon, April 3. Interment was private. She is sdrvived by two grandnom Charles w. Buckley and Robert S Buckley, both of Barrington. Mrs. Hodges liked to sit in her Highland Park home and reminisce of her girlhood spent on the farm. She was an accomplished rider. She remembered the Indians in the woods near her home, the Civil war, and the surrender of General Lee. She met Lincoln in Washington. She remem- bered a southern spy that was caught and who was being held in her fath- er's hotel, and of bringing her friends home from school to see him. “Aunt Etta" as she was known to all who loved her so dearly, had a long and interesting life. Of a patri- cian family, her father a well known land owner and hotel man of Battle Creek, was a direct descendant of the famous Halladay pioneer family who came to America from Scotland in 1638, landing in Connecticut. The Halladay's were vast land holders, and they developed the section. which is now Battle Creek. Death came to Mrs. Etta Hailaday Hodges, 92, wife of the late Carl A. Hodges, at her home, 337 Central avenue, Saturday.
