The common notion that prayer is a form of thinking or talking to be used only in special cases of emergency has been pretty well disproved. More and more are men coming to see that a habituâ€" ally reverent attitude of thought, a daily acknowledgment of God‘s everâ€"presence, brings an assurâ€" ance and a poise that nothing else can. G LANCING at the heading of a columnt of a newspaper he had just purchased, a reader misâ€" took the words "Pay as you go" for "Pray as you go." What an arresting title, he thought, as he eagerly began reading the article to learn how the writer had deâ€" veloped the idea. The first senâ€" tence, of course, disclosed the corâ€" rect subject, but the ideaâ€"Pray as you goâ€"persisted. "Payâ€"asâ€"youâ€"go" â€" plans, by which income taxes may be paid as income is earned, have been in the forefront of public discussion. By this method, it is asserted, the busden of accumulated debt for Federal income taxes will be lifted, since the tax will be paid as the income is received. Thus, it is reasoned, taxes on former inâ€" come will not accrue as a liabilty against present earnings. So, too, when we pay cash for purchases in everyday living, we avoid debt. We are spared the accumulated burden of unsettled accounts. As a result, our power to think is left free to be exercised producâ€" tively instead, of being hampered by worry and fear incidental to debt. Continued alertness and control of our thinking along conâ€" structive, spiritual lines will also ensure a balanced mental acâ€" count. Pray as you go. "Pray without ceasing," the Bible states it (I Thessalonians 5:17). This beâ€" comes a practical possibility when prayerful thinking is understood as an admonifion to think rightly all the time." More than this, it urges us to keep our mental acâ€" counts square as we go. We are not only to prayâ€"to think rightly â€"*"*without ceasing" we are to eancel undesirable thoughts as BETHANY EVANGELICAL Pray as You Go Highland Park SUNDAY 7:30 a.m., Holy Communion. 9:30 a.m., Sunday School. 11 a.m., Prayer and Sermon. There is no mystery, no impracâ€" tical advice, in the phrase, "Pray without ceasing." It requires priâ€" marily the comscious effort to enâ€" tertain only right ideas as they urfold. "Practice makes perfect" is an axiom, applicable to prayâ€" ing, or thinking rightly. When confronted by an emergency, the right thinker, dns\-d of striving frantically to an immediate demand upon his spiritual reâ€" sources, finds himself conscious of dominion over fear and over a belief that he is in danger. He then needs only to hold his ground, understanding and acâ€" knowledging God‘s presence and protection. . . .. y § A simple rule by which to make practical this power to govern our thinking is given by Mary Baker Eddy on page 261 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scripâ€" tures," where she writes, "Hold thought steadfastly to the endurâ€" ing, the good, and ‘the true, and you will bring these into your exâ€" perience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." Under the stress of circumâ€" stances, astonishing things are sometimes*accomplished through prayer by those unaccustomed to pray as they go. Faced with an emergeney,â€"people â€" have _been known to reach unwonted heiights of spiritual resourcefuiness. Do not such occasions‘offer an ink= ling of the divine capacities that would be ours daily and hourly m“hdcwlqpurabllny‘ truly to "pray without ceasing"â€" hmllnuclnlm.‘l supreme power of good, in our experience?
