Ross James Beatty, 96, of 260 Ravine drive, passed away at the Highland. Park hospital on Saturâ€" day, Aug. 19, after two days‘ confinement there. He had been aâ€"resident of Highland Park for the past 42 years, moving here in 1908. He was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1854. At 14 he was left the sole support of his mother and sister with his father‘s death. He worked in the steel mills in Pittsburgh, building up to managership of a mill. With the discovery of natural gas in Marion, Indiana, he built. his own mill there, selling..it in 1908 when hecame to Highland Park, after buying an interest in the Inland Steel. The first mill ever built on the lake, at Indiana Harbor, was under his direction. He retired as Viceâ€"President of the Inland Steel in 1925. Besides his wife, Mildred Ryan Beatty, he is survived by two sons, Ross J., Jr., of Lake Forest and John T. of Winnetka; one daughter, Mrs. Warner Atkins (Veronese Beatty) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at home on Monday, August 21, with burial in North Shore Garden of Memories.
