The Flora DeVoss Theatrical company closed a two nights' engagement at the Empire theatre last Thursday evening and, as usual, pleased two large and appreciative audiences. Local merchants are warned tp be on the look-out for shop lifters. One merchant has already reported the loss of several articles, which is believed to have been the work of locpl talent. Mr. and Mrs. William Powers welcomed a baby daughter into their home on the Crystal Lake road on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The little miss will answer to the name of Nona Harriette. The McHenry post, American Legion, has just installed a handsome new Brunswick phonograph in their club rooms on the West Side. The instrument was purchased thru Everett H&nter, Jr. A team hitched to a milk wagon and owned hy John S. Freund, who resides east of the village,. took fright at a passing automobile at the intersection of Green and Elm streets on Monday morning of this week and smashed info the signal post at that point. A broken wagon pqle and the smashing of the red electric light globe was the only damage done, altho for an instant it looked as if liie trouble would be more serious. While hurrying to the bedside his wife at the Woodstock hospital on Wednesday evening of last week, M. Rabbett of that city was struck and knocked down by a large touring car while he was crossing the street. The driver of the car never stopped and therefore his identity is unknown, altho an investigation is being coniucted by county Wit authorities. Mr. Rabbett received quite severe cuts and bruises, about -thjfc body as well as sprained wrist and a wrench to his right leg. D. of A. The election was followed by cuds and ;tp» freshments. Methodist Church In the Christmas sermon one's thoughts inevitably turn to Jesus and the Meaning of His life for the world. The attention of the morning service next Sunday will be. directed toward the subject of "The Need of Jesus in our Modern Life." On the Sunday following, the second of the union services will be held in the Methodist church and Mr. J. M. Grimes will deliver the message of the morning. The community Sunday school meets as usual at 9:45 a. m. and the continued large attendance is looked for. George Niggemeyer Sentenced George Niggemeyer of Fox Lake, who a short time ago was convicted of the murder- of John L. Johnson, Chicago merchant, on Monday of this week was sentenced to twenty-five years in the Joliet prison by Judge Claire C. Edwards of the Lake county circuit court. His wife and sister were in court the morning that sentence wad pronounced: He starts serving hie sentence this week. * , "Mrs. Frank Young Mrs. Frank Young, aged sixty-seven years, passed away at her late home at Spring Grove on Tuesday of this week. Funeral took place from the Catholic church in that village this (Thursday) morning at ten o'clock.
