THURSDAY. .U GRAYS WINANDLOSE UMPIRE MAKE^ QUESTIONABLE DECISION SATURDAY LIBERTYVILLE WINS 4-3; Mc- HENRY DEFEATS STATE LINE SUNDAY 7 TO 4 A very questionable decision on the part of ye umps in the last half of the ninth inning at the Fourth of July game at Libertyville gave the home crew a 4 to 3 verdict over the McHenry Grays in a contest which was all set to go into extra innings. The decision was on a fly ball along the right field foul line that fell, according to any sane man, ten feet foul The official, however, saw it in an entirely different light, ruled the ball in fair territory, and allowed a runner who had previously reached first base, to score. No sooner had Jthe decision been made before thereg was a run-in between players and fans but all arguments seemed to have been made in vain as the umpire could not be induced to make the change. Up to the ninth inning the fans were treated to a fairly interesting exhibition of the national pastime, in spite of the fact that the officials seemed to be missing them with marked regularity. Bixby was on the hill for the heme club while Davison performed for McHenry. Both pitchers put up a very creditable exhibition. The former allowed but five hits while Davison yielded seven, including the last fly which caused all the trouble The game by innings was as follows: | FIRST INNING: Rosier lifted to Baxter. Gross was thrown out by Bixby and Tornquist skied to McHen^ No hits, no runs. LIBERTYVILLE: Brewer skied to Gross. McHen lined to Re pas and Walsh lifted to Tornquist. No hits, no runs. SECOND INNING: Strong made an exceptionally fine catch of Kern's line drive to left. Kingsley drew a walk and went to third when Carlton allowed Rogers' fly to get away from him. Montgomery played for Rogers on an attempted steal but Brewer was slow on the return, the play letting Kingsleyscore while Rogers was resting on second. Repas struck out. No hits, one run LIBERTYVILLE: Baxter lifted to Repas. Montgomery was thrown out by Davison. Strong lined to Repas. No hits, no runs THIRD INNING: Raasch was out, Brewer to Altenberg. Davison thrown out by Bixby. Kosier dropped a two-ply smash to center. Gross out, Baxter to Altenberg. One hit, no runs. LIBERTYVILLE: Carlton fouled to Kingsley. Altenberg rolled to Raasch. Bixby walked and so did Brewer. Davison apparently had McHen struck out and both he and Kingsley started for the bench when ye umps ruled his apparent third strike a ball. This decision sort of upset Davison for a minute with the result that McHen slammed the next ball into deep right for three bases, the hit scoring Bixby and Brewer. Walsh was out, Davison to Raasch. One hit, two runs. FOURTH INNING: Tornquist doubled to center. Kern struck out and then Kingsley drew a walk. Both runners advanced one base when Rogers rolled to Altenberg. With men on second and third, Repas struck out. One hit, no runs. LIBERTYVILLE: Baxter and Montgomery struck out and Strong lifted to^ Repas. No hits, no runs. FIFTH INNING: Raasch skied to Walsh. Davison was thrown out by Brewer and Kosier was nailed by McHen. No hits, no runs. LIBERTYVILLE: Carlton <^nt, Gross to Raasch. Altenberg fanned. Bixby was safe on Kosier's error and Brewer's single put Bixby on third. Bixby was caught at home plate when Kingsley and Kern pulled the short throw play on Brewer's steal and nailed Bixby at the plate. Ome hit, no runs. SIXTH INNING: Gross singled to center but was forced at second when Tornquist's attempted sacrifice rolled to Bixby. Tornquist stole second. Kern and Kingsley both fanned. One hit, no runs. LIBERTYVILLE: McHen singled past third and took second on Walsh's sacrifice, Bixby to Altenberg. Baxter was thrown out by Tornquist. Mont gomery singled to left, the hit putting McHen on third. Strong dropped single back of short, McHen scoring and Montgomery going to second. Carlton was thrown out by Davison. Three hits, one run. SEVENTH INNING: Rogers drew a pass but was forced at second when Repas rolled to Bixby.fi Raasch put Repas on third with a single over third and took second himself on the throwin. Davison shot a roller down to Altenberg on which Repas started for home. Altenberg's throw to the plate got away from Montgomery and when the excitement had subsided, both Repas and Raasch were across the counting station. McHENRY Taking advantage of the State Line misplays, the McHenry Grays succeeded in handing the Liners a 7 to 4 defeat at the State Line park last Sunday afternoon. The Liners outhlt "our gang by a safe margin but they just couldn't get these blows at the right time and therefore their third defeat of the season at the hands of McHenry. Davison, who pitched a hard game at Libertyville only the day before, again occupied the mound at the State Line park, and considering all things, he must be given a great deal of credit. This is the second time this season that Davison pitched two games in succession, a feat which is very seldom recorded by any pitcher, not barring the big leaguers. McHenry pulled a couple of fast double plays during the contest and also staged one or two other infield "stunts" that are worthy of special mention. The game by innings: FIRST INNING: Kosier walked and took second on Gross' sacrifice, Edgar to Seiberlich. Tornquist also walked. Kern then started a fast double play for the Liners by rolling down to Edgar, the double was completed via De- Vorak and Seiberlich. No hits, no runs. STATE LINE: McClellan was thrown out by Kern. Phillips struck out and DeVorak lifted to Repas. No hits, no runs. SECOND INNING: Kingsley sin gled to center and took second on Rogers' sacrifice, Edgar to Seiberlich. Repas struck out and Raasch was thrown out by DeVorak. One hit, no runs. STATE LINE: Williams shot a single between short and third. Heideman's was credited with a single to Kern. The ball, going at a very good rate of speed was knocked down by Kern but the latter could not recover in time for the forced put out at second. As a result both runners were safe. Seiberlich struck out. Gross pulled a smart play on a ball hit down to him by Sevic. Instead of waiting to tag Williams on his way to third, Gross shot the baA to Kern and Kern to Raasch to complete a speedy double. It was one of the best plays pulled off by McHenry this season. One hit, no runs. ^ THIRD INNING: Davison was thrown out by DeVorak. Kosier singled to left and was caught at second when he tried to stretch the hit into double. Britz lost the ball in the sun.
