Sutton, 86 years old, Civil war veteran "were held from the Sacred Heart church at Marengo on Wednesday .morning of last week. Many beautiful flowers were offerings of relatives and friends and while testifying to the love and esteem for the departed, offered sweet sympathy to the heart broken children relatives and friends. Michael P. Sutton was born at Kilkenny, Ireland, Sept. 19, 1841, and died at his home near Marengo at 12:30 o'clock, Monday, Oct. 23, at the advanced age of 86 years, death following long months of suffering due to advancing age. He came to this, country with his jparents in 1853, settling near Waukegan, later moving to Rockford, where he enlisted on Nov. 18, 1862, in the Twenty-third Illinois Volunteers. This 'was a part of Mulligan's Irish Brigade and it was while with them that he was twice wounded and once taken prisoner by the southerners in July of 1868. After serving two months in Libby prison he was exchanged and rejoined his old regiment, from which he was honorably discharged in April, 1865, after having taken part in the grand review before President Lincoln at Washington, D. C. His marriage to Miss Johanna Houlihan took place at McHenry, 111., on February 20, 1870, and for over fifty-seven years they hive been happy in the loving companionship of one another. 1 Nine children came to bless this home, seven of whom, with the widow, survive. They are Philip, William Agnes Sutton at home, Mrs. John Sheahan, Jr., of Mlarengo, Mrs. John Norton of Belvidere, Raymond of Rockford and Frank of Seattle, Wash. Mr. Sutton was the uncle of Mrs. Ellen Whiting of this vicinity. Those from McHenry who attended the funeral were Mrs. Ellen Whiting and sons, Earl and William, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Whiting.
